Independent member in Maharashtra Legislative Council Kapil Patil wrote to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis demanding that MHADA, the state government’s housing agency, should not allot low-cost houses to MPs or legislators, among others.

“The flats constructed for the poor and needy aspirants should not be given to MPs, MLAs, Corporators, IAS officers and the members of judiciary, however, these can be allotted to artisans, sportsmen, journalists and other needy people of the society,” Patil said in his letter.

RTI activist Anil Galgali had earlier opposed reservation of 19 MHADA flats for sitting or former MPs and MLAs.

Thirteen of these flats fall in the categories of houses meant for Economically Weaker Section, Lower Income Group and Middle Income Group.

Galgali had written to the chief minister, who is the chairman of MHADA, to scrap this quota.

Patil also claimed that in 2009 the then Chief Minister Ashok Chavan had allotted him a flat in Versova, but he had returned it.
