Anil Parab and Shiv Sena activist threatens to enter inside the airport and disrupt its functioning if toll charges levied on vehicles are not abolished. Shiv Sena held a protest outside Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport under the leadership of Sena MLC Anil Parab and forcibly closed down a collection plaza for levying a entry fee of Rs 130 from vehicles entering the airport. Parab had earlier demanded that GVK group which operates the airport is creating huge hardships for commuters by asking them to pay toll amount even though many vehicles are not parked near the airport. He also had threatened that if GVK doesn’t withdraw toll levy then Sena will protest in its own style. Shiv Sena activists held placards and shouted slogans ‘Har Har Mahadev’ and ‘Jai Shivaji Jai Bhavani’. Since many of them were holding dharna outside the airport it led to massive traffic jams and caused inconvenience to passengers.

Parab also warned of dire consequences if GVK starts levying toll again. He said, “We are Shiv Sainiks and we can do anything. People have seen us organising aggressive protests in the past also. Today, we are only protesting against toll outside the airport. Tomorrow, we will enter inside the airport and disrupt its functioning if GVK fails to abolish toll charges.”

“We are not entering the airport to carry out any bomb blast and won’t create any law and order problem. We may enter Reddy’s residence if they continue to levy toll,” he added.

Passengers have to shell out Rs 130 as toll charges even though their vehicles are not parked outside the airport. Therefore they have to undergo huge inconvenience.

“Airport authority has offered contract to GVK for the construction of the elevated road connecting airport. They are not levying parking charges and are charging exorbitant fee as toll from passengers thereby causing hardships to them,” he added.

When we asked that carrying out protests will impact the image of the international airport he said, “We are only raising this issue in the interest of passengers. It’s the duty of the airport authorities to look after the security aspect. Toll is only levied in the Mumbai airport and other airports across the country are exempted from it. Why injustice is being meted out with passengers from the city?”

Whenever passengers question toll operators about why they are charging a fee to enter the airport they fail to give an appropriate answer and only show the toll receipt book.

Security has been tightened near the toll plaza following the protests to avert any untoward incident. Parab also reminded the GVK authorities that an equestrian statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj should be re-installed at the gate of the airport.
