Rogers uncertain over Oz’s No 1 Test rank, says 4-0 India thrashing not mark of top team

Australian opening batsman Chris Rogers is not confident if his team should be ranked world No 1 in Tests and said that the team’s 4-0 thrashing by India is not the mark of a top team.

The ranking system reportedly prompted Australia to the top for the first time in nearly five years on Thursday after dropping results from the 2010-11 season from their calculations.

However, Rogers is unconvinced regarding Australia’s promotions along with others who raised eyebrows as the team got promoted without bowling a ball, which came only weeks after South Africa got awarded a 4,75,000-dollar cheque by the ICC for finishing the season on top, Sport24 reported.

The left-handed opener said that there is obviously some unfinished business as a team cannot lose four-nil in India if they are No 1, but feels that defeating South Africa at their home means a lot.

Rogers said that South Africa had been No 1 and to beat them in their place is a big achievement, adding that he feels that they are going in the right direction and they just need to keep playing well.

Australia reportedly got thrashed 4-0 by India last year before losing 3-0 in England, but made a comeback to thrash England 5-0 in the return Ashes series on home soil and they finished the season strongly with a hard-fought 2-1 series win away against South Africa.

However, South Africa can reclaim their top-spot in the world Test rankings with test wins against Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe before Australia have a chance to defend it in a series against Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates in October, the report added.
