SAFF champions occupies 163rd position in FIFA ranking

Seven-time SAFF champions India climbs up three places to occupy 163rd spot in the latest FIFA ranking released on Wednesday.

Sunil Chhetri-led team beat defending champions and higher ranked Afghanistan 2-1 in the final of the regional competition on Sunday. The triumph helped India gain valuable points.

India were also unbeaten in the competition, and had beaten Sri Lanka, Nepal and Maldives.

India garnered 139 points and occupy 31st spot among Asian countries. Iran, on 43rd spot, leads the Asian countries, followed by Korea (51), Japan (53), Australia (59) and UAE (64).

Asian countries Saudi Arabia and Thailand were the best movers on points and places respectively. Saudi Arabia added 42 points from the previous release with 474 points while Thailand jumped 12 places to occupy 121.

Belgium continued to occupy the overall ranking with 1494 points, followed by Argentina, Spain, Germany and Chile. Traditional powerhouse Brazil are on sixth, ahead of Portugal, Columbia, England and Austria.
