Protests over the alleged illegal construction of a mosque in Sanjauli, Shimla, escalated on Wednesday, leading to police intervention. Hindu organizations, including the Civil Society Devbhoomi Sangathan, had called for a protest, resulting in clashes with the police, who used water cannons and lathicharge to disperse the crowd.
Protesters, carrying the national flag, accused the Himachal Pradesh government of targeting peaceful demonstrators. One protester criticized the state’s actions, claiming that women and members of the Hindu community were met with force despite a peaceful approach.
Himachal Pradesh Minister Vikramaditya Singh emphasized that while peaceful protests are allowed, law and order must be maintained. He clarified that the mosque’s construction is under judicial review, and any action, including potential demolition, will follow due legal process.
Media advisor Naresh Chauhan countered claims that the protest was about a religious divide, accusing the BJP of trying to politicize the issue for electoral gains. Chauhan stated that the government is focused on maintaining peace and ensuring the matter is resolved legally, noting that local support for the protests has been minimal.
Leader of Opposition Jairam Thakur criticized the state government for delaying action on the alleged illegal construction, calling for swift resolution.
