Modi General Reservation

Ahead of the crucial Lok Sabha elections this year, in a landmark move, 10 per cent reservation in jobs and educational institutions for the economically deprived section among the general category gets its approval from the Union Cabinet on Monday as per the sources.

The section doesn’t get reservation as of now and this move by the Modi cabinet is being seen as a step to consolidate the upper castes.

As per reports, this reservation will be over and above the existing 50 per cent reservation. Moreover, the government is likely to bring a constitutional amendment bill in Parliament on Tuesday to implement the scheme at its earliest.

“The reservation will be given to those economically backward poor people who are not availing the benefit of reservation as of now,” a source said.

The reservation benefit is likely to be availed by those whose annual income is below Rs 8 lakh and have up to five acres of land, a source said.

Articles 15 and 16 of the Constitution will have to be amended for implementation of the decision

(More details awaited.)
