At least people twelve were killed, seventeen were severely injured and fourteen others were reported missing as landslides struck Indonesia‘s West Java province.

A senior disaster agency official informed on Sunday that heavy downpours triggered the landslides at Cihanjuan village of Sumedang district at about 4 p.m. on Saturday, burying eight people.

Head of Emergency Unit of Provincial Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) Budi Budiman cited, “When search and rescue operation for the victims was underway, suddenly other landslides occurred and buried several rescuers.”

Additional landslides occurred later at 7,30 p.m., and among those buried by mud and rocks were the head of the emergency unit of the BPBD in the district and military commander in Cimanggung sub-district, Budiman said.

“This is because the condition of the soils on the scene is unstable,” continued the official.

Due to the landslide, reportedly 14 houses were destroyed, leaving 17 people injured, some of whom were being treated at the health clinic in the village, Budiman added.

As the search for the missing people resumed on Sunday morning, three heavy machinery equipment were deployed with over 500 rescuers involved in the operation. The rescue operation is underway.
