The AAP city unit held a sit-in agitation at Azad Maidan to protest against the detention of party leaders Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia in Delhi.

AAP spokesperson Preeti Sharma Menon, who led the agitation, said, “Delhi Chief Minister (Kejriwal) and Deputy Chief Minister (Sisodia) were detained at the behest of the Modi government. It shows the breakdown of democracy. What happened in the national capital yesterday was undemocratic, tyrannical and disturbing.”

“Not only our leaders, but scores of other volunteers were detained, which we strongly condemn as this act was nothing less than an insult of our jawans and their families by Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” she said.

During today’s protest, the AAP members held placards and raised slogans against the Modi government.

The AAP leader said the BJP government was “backtracking on its promise of implementation of OROP (One Rank One Pension).

70-year-old ex-serviceman Ram Kishan Grewal from Haryana’s Bhiwani district allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison over the issue of OROP in Delhi yesterday.

Kejriwal, Sisodia and Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi were detained by police when they tried to meet Grewal’s family.

Sharma-Menon alleged that family members of Grewal were mercilessly beaten by the “shameless, barbaric and uncouth” Delhi police, “whose actions are reflection of the commands set in motion by their masters at the Centre”.

“It is also very shocking that the Chief Minister of Delhi is not allowed to meet the grieving family members in a hospital of his own state and was forcibly detained,” she said.

Replying to a query on BJP asking the opposition parties not to politicise the death of Grewal, Sharma said, “This is a political issue…and why was the BJP playing politics over the surgical strikes by pasting posters everywhere? Why did their leaders say that surgical strikes was an outcome of RSS training”.
