Private discom Reliance Energy has entered into an agreement to buy 250 mw of additional power to meet peak summer demand in the city which is likely to cross 1,700 mw during the summer months.

The discom, which has over 24 lakh customers, sees the the megapolis peak power demand to overshoot last year’s 3,581 mw this summer.

Last year’s peak load was 1,627 mw. In fiscal 2013, the power demand was 3,153 mw while Reliance’s peak demand was 1,330 mw in the summer months April to June.

This 250 mw of additional power is over and above the existing long-term power purchase agreements for 1,262 mw, the company said.

“We expect our peak summer demand to cross 1,700 mw during the April-June season, while system wide load for the entire city will be above 3,581 mw. We have made provisions for 1,627 mw so far with additional PPAs in view of the extremely hot summer that the Met has forecast this year,” Reliance Energy said in a statement.
