Declining law and order situation in UP

This refers to your editorial “Mathura Violence: Poll bugle for UP Assembly Election 2017”. The Mathura violence is cause for serious concern. It clearly shows that the mindless violence is the political patronage. Such incidents happen regularly all over India and claims several lives. The problem of encroachment is widespread not just in Uttar Pradesh but across India. It is evident that the Samajwadi Party government has miserably failed in its duty to ensure peace and handled the outfit with kid gloves. It is disheartening that those who maintain law and order have to suffer the consequences. Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav’s statement that the tragic turn of events was a sequel to administrative misjudgement is a gross understatement. At the first sign of such violations, the authorities are duty-bound to act and evict those engaged in criminal activities. The scale of the violence and the retaliatory action that recalcitrant groups unleashed on the police are alarming. Their motives seem to have been to ensure massive land grabbing. Looking at this incident government should strengthen police force, intelligence and strategically wipe out the lawlessness in the state.
