Don’t spoil budding cricketers

Delhi Daredevils decision to pay Rs 8.5 cr to Pawan Negi whose base price was Rs.30 Lacs is exorbitant money paid to a rookie player however talented he may have been. Such showering of money on young players I guess is bad for the future of Indian cricket. It spoils young cricketers who get such sums and fame overnight and even the great Tendulkar would agree as he too had to slog for years before he attained fame and that kind of money. Young players today nurture their game to suit T-20 cricket and playing for an IPL franchise than the national team is their set goal which truly is sad and bad for the future of Indian cricket.

Also, one finds the IPL model questionable where franchise owners with huge debts and borrowings against their names buy players at ambiguous and unrealistic valuations. Two teams even had to be suspended for illegal conduct and still we have this league going which means the cricket Board and the government is encouraging something which is not good for the health of Indian cricket as well as corporate governance in our country. Corruption rules roost in our country and time to cleanse the system as tournaments like IPL only encourage gambling at the expense of the game. Cricketers though are not complaining and laughing their way to the bank but I am sure cricket statistics and records have more fame and pride attached as they would be remembered for ages to come while money made out of IPL would be spent and forgotten in a few years!
