The Bombay High Court directed Maharashtra government to file an affidavit detailing steps taken by it to provide safety and security to women who travel during late hours either to work or home.

A division bench of Justices V M Kanade and Nutan Sardessai was hearing a public interest litigation of which the high court had taken suo moto (on its own) cognisance with regard to safety of women in the city.

The court said there are several women who work till late in the night and the government should take adequate measures to provide them safety and security.

The bench directed the government to file an affidavit by December 21 on the issue.

The court also sought the affidavit to say what other steps the government has taken on implementation of the recommendations made by the Dharmadhikari committee.

The government had earlier appointed a committee headed by retired Justice C S Dharmadhikari to suggest ways to curb crimes against women.
