Kumble the right choice for Indian coach

Former Indian test captain Anil Kumble deserves praise for being appointed as the head coach of Team India for one year. It is good sign that board has realised the Indian talent and reposed faith in Indian origin as coach. Kumble is one of India’s greatest match-winners and is the highest wicket-taker in Tests. With 619 wickets from 132 matches, is the third most successful bowler in Test history behind Muttiah Muralitharan (800) and Shane Warne (708). He has shown his mettle as a strong “technician” of Cricket in the field, and a tough fighter. He had to face opposition from members but pressed on with his agenda to improve cricket infrastructure at grassroots level. He is a great person in the first place, a great cricketer and possess all the qualities a leader should have. He hasn’t shied away from responsibility. He has experience and has shown great strength of character in difficult situations. Kumble is highly respected, non-controversial and richly deserved the job. He can carry the team and mould it to achieve the results. No doubt, Ravi Shastri was a good leader but Kumble has played much more international cricket than him and he should be definitely better than the former. He may have to be a little tough in controlling the known tempered players. The one year term is short and he should have been given at least two years. Let’s hope our Indian Cricket Team shines under Kumble’s leadership.
