In the wake of a ghastly terror attack in Pulwama where 40 CRPF personnel were killed earlier this week, Cricket Club of India (CCI) secretary Suresh Bafna on Sunday said that India should not play a match against Pakistan in the forthcoming World Cup.

Speaking to agencies, Suresh said that since Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has not come out openly about the attack in Kashmir, it shows that they are at fault somewhere.” We condemn the terror activities carried out against our army and CRPF personnel. Though CCI is a sporting association nation comes first even before sports,” he said. “He (Imran Khan) should respond. He is the Prime Minister and if he believes that Pakistan has no role to play in the attack then why is he not coming out openly. He should come out openly. People should know the truth. He is not coming out openly which means that there are Stains in their folds,” Suresh added.

After the terror attack, CCI had covered the portrait of Imran Khan at its Brabourne stadium headquarters in Mumbai. The secretary said that the step was their way of condemning the barbaric attack on their security personnel. “We called a meeting on the very next day of the attack and to condemn the attack, we decided to cover the photo. We’ll be deciding soon how to remove the photo,” he said. Imran has twice played for Pakistan against India at the Brabourne Stadium. He had led Pakistan in a festival game against India in 1987.

He also played an ODI at the venue when he led Pakistan to victory against Australia in a Nehru Cup Game in 1989, where he was also declared as the Man of the Match. Hours after the attack on February 14, the Pakistan Foreign Ministry issued a wishy-washy statement, terming as “a matter of grave concern” the terror attack on the CRPF convoy which was carried out by Jaish-e-Mohammed outfit based in that country.

Karol Bagh fire: Hotel Arpit Palace owner Rakesh Goel arrested by Delhi Police

Rakesh GoelThe Delhi Police Crime Branch has arrested Rakesh Goel, the owner of the hotel where 17 people were killed in a massive fire recently, police said. Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Rajesh Deo said Goel was produced in the Duty Magistrate court later on Sunday.

17 people, including a child, were killed and 11 were injured after a massive fire broke out in Hotel Arpit Palace, a five-storeyed hotel in central Delhi’s Karol Bagh area in the wee hours of Tuesday. Earlier in the week, Delhi Minister Satyendra Jain had alleged that the owner of the hotel had a connection with the BJP, and hence, had not been arrested.

“It is important to form norms to be followed. MCD is allowing the illegal construction of such hotels by taking bribes. Even the owner of Arpit Hotel where the unfortunate fire incident took place hasn’t been arrested. It seems that most likely he is a BJP leader hence no action is being taken. This shows that all these hotels are functioning by paying money to politicians. We, however, will make all these hotels comply with fire norms or make them shut down,” he had told agencies. Jain had also said that No Objection Certificates (NOC) of as many as 30 hotels were withdrawn in two days. According to the Delhi Fire Department, as many as 35 people were rescued from the hotel.

Puducherry CM’s dharna against Lt Guv enters 5th day, he warns of ‘jail bharo’ from Feb 20

puduchery cm dharnaPuducherry Chief Minister V Narayanasamy on Sunday warned his ‘dharna’ outside Raj Nivas, for Lt Governor Kiran Bedi’s approval for his government’s proposals on welfare schemes and administrative matters, would intensify into a “jail bharo” agitation from February 20.

As his dharna entered the fifth day on Sunday, Narayanasamy said, “Our protest will continue till our demands, contained in the letter sent to the Lt Governor on February 7, are met.”

He has accused Bedi of not approving his government’s 39 proposals for welfare schemes, including a free rice scheme, and on administrative matters.

In a letter to Narayanasamy, Bedi has reacted sharply to the public protest and termed his dharna “unlawful”. She has offered to discuss all issues with him at a public forum on February 21.

The two have been at loggerheads on various administrative issues since Bedi was appointed LG in May 2016.

On Sunday, the Chief Minister, his ministers, and leaders of the ruling coalition hoisted black flags atop their residences as part of their protest against the Lt governor.

Claiming that Bedi had “threatened” to take the protesters to the task, he said, “We will not be cowed down by such threats and we are prepared even to court arrest”.

“We will launch a ‘jail bharo’ agitation on February 20 by holding protests in front of central government institutions and will observe fast outside the Head Post Office on February 21,” he said.

Sacrifices of CRPF jawans will not go in vain: Amit Shah

Amit Shah

BJP president Amit Shah on Sunday said that the sacrifices of the 40 CRPF jawans, killed in a terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, would not go in vain as the BJP government at the Centre, unlike the erstwhile Congress dispensation, would not compromise on any security issue.

Addressing a rally here, Shah said the gruesome attack was carried out by Pakistan-backed terrorists, who would not be spared at any cost.

“This cowardly act was done by Pakistani terrorists. Their (jawans’) sacrifices will not go in vain, because there is no Congress government at the Centre. It is BJP government and the Narendra Modi government will not compromise on any security issue,” he added.

Slamming the opposition Congress and its former ally Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), Shah said both the parties did nothing to implement the Assam Accord despite ruling most of the period since signing of the pact in 1985.

“We will not allow Assam to become another Kashmir. That is why we have brought NRC (National Register of Citizens). We will deport each and every infiltrator with the help of NRC. We are committed to that,” he added.

On the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, which the Centre failed to table in Rajya Sabha, the BJP President said misinformation were being spread as if it was only for Assam and other parts of the Northeast.

“It was not only for Northeast but for all refugees in the entire country. The way demography is changing in Assam, without the Citizenship Bill, the people of the state will be in big danger,” he added.

The AMU has issued an advisory to its Kashmiri students asking them “not to move out of the campus” as a precautionary measure after protests broke out in this city in the aftermath of the Pulwama terror attack, varsity authorities said.

In the deadliest attack on security forces in Kashmir last Thursday that left 40 CRPF personnel dead, the “fidayeen” (suicide attacker) was identified as Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terrorist Adil Ahmad from Kakapora in Pulwama.

Several parts of this city witnessed protests after the attack, prompting the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) authorities to issue an advisory to its Kashmiri students cautioning them against moving out of the campus.

AMU Proctor Professor Mohsin Khan told agencies, “The university authorities are maintaining a constant vigil on law and order situation on the campus, especially in the wake of highly inflammatory social media posts emanating from the city.”

Khan added, “We are very clear that there is going to be zero tolerance on our part towards any act of lawlessness, especially one which smacks of anti-national activity even remotely.”

The AMU Proctor said it suspended a Kashmiri student for his alleged objectionable tweet in connection with the Pulwama attack.

Govt to examine steel players’ demand for MIP on steel: Official

74546 steel2The government will examine domestic steel companies’ demand for imposing minimum import price (MIP) on the metal, an official said. In a meeting on February 6, major steel players, including state-owned Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) and JSW Steel, requested the steel ministry to impose an MIP on all steel products, amid a surge in imports from countries such as Indonesia and rising raw material costs, which are putting pressure on margins.

The MIP is the rate below which no imports are allowed.

“The situation has to be examined carefully. The ministry will first examine then only take some action,” a steel ministry official said when asked whether the ministry is in favour of imposing MIP on steel imports.

The official, who did not wish to be named, added, “Everything happens after examination. If there is a requirement, we will definitely do it. If not required, we will not do. There has not been any due diligence yet.”

In the meeting, the companies requested the steel ministry to implement and enforce a MIP on all steel products as implemented in February 2016.

The players have said steel imports have increased due to trade diversion from China, Japan, and South Korea. As a result, India has become a net importer of steel in 2018-19 despite being the second-largest producer of the metal in India.

In February 2016, India had imposed MIP on a number of items with a sunset clause of one year.

India has already imposed anti-dumping duties on several steel products to protect the interest of local industry from dumped imports.
