United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken has called on the Taliban to reverse their decision of banning women employees of NGOs from the workplace. Taking to his official Twitter handle, Blinken stressed that millions of Afghans depend on humanitarian assistance for their survival.

“I join allies and partners in calling on the Taliban to reverse their dangerous order barring female employees of national and international NGOs from the workplace. Millions of Afghans depend on humanitarian assistance for their survival. NGOs must reach the most vulnerable,” Blinken said in the tweet. Blinken’s statement comes after the Taliban on Saturday ordered all local and foreign NGOs to stop female employees from coming to work in the country, according to Tolo News.

The decision comes a few days after the Taliban ordered the closure of universities to female students across the country.

Earlier on December 27, the United Nations Security Council in a press statement said that the members of the security council are “profoundly concerned” by reports that the Taliban have banned female employees of NGOs and international organizations from going to work.

The UNSC stated that the decision of the Taliban will have an “immediate and significant” impact on humanitarian operations in Afghanistan. “The Security Council is furthermore profoundly concerned by reports that the Taliban have banned female employees of NGOs and international organizations from going to work, which would have a significant and immediate impact on humanitarian operations in the country, including those of the UN, and the delivery of aid and health work, and that these restrictions contradict the commitments made by the Taliban to the Afghan people as well as the expectations of the international community,” the UNSC said in a statement.

The UNSC further stated that they are “deeply alarmed” by reports that the Taliban has banned women from attending universities. It called on the Taliban to reverse their decisions and reopen schools and universities for women and girls.

Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Nitesh Rane has said he along with members of the Sakal Hindu Samaj have asked the Maharashtra government to enact a law in the state against “love jihad” and religious conversion.

Speaking to reporters in the state legislature complex in Nagpur on Wednesday, Rane said Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis have assured to bring such a law soon in the state.

“Love jihad” is a term often used by right-wing activists to allege a ploy by Muslim men to lure Hindu women into religious conversion through marriage Rane said he along with women representatives of the Sakal Hindu Samaj met Chief Minister Shinde and Deputy CM Fadnavis, demanding a law against “love jihad” and religious conversion in Maharashtra, on the lines of Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Gujarat and other states.

“The chief minister and the deputy CM have taken our demands seriously and assured to bring a law soon in the state,” he said.

Rane said the Sakal Hindu Samaj has been taking out morchas in every district of Maharashtra, demanding a strict law against “love jihad” and religious conversion.

Fadnavis had last week said the government would study laws on “love jihad” framed by other states and take an appropriate decision.

Notably, Maharashtra minister and BJP leader Girish Mahajan recently alleged the death of actor Tunisha Sharma last week was a matter of “love jihad” and that the state was planning to bring a strict law to curb such incidents.

State BJP MLA Atul Bhatkhalkar on Wednesday demanded that a probe be conducted from “love jihad” angle into Sharma’s death, in which her co-star Sheezan Khan has been arrested.

Spinner Nathan Lyon took 3-58 as Australia bowled out South Africa for 204 Thursday to claim victory by an innings and 182 runs on the fourth day of the second test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Australia clinched the series and will be chasing a 3-0 sweep in Sydney where the third and final test starts on Jan. 4.

Tamba Bavuma top-scored for South Africa with 65, although he also played key roles in two run outs.

Resuming Thursday on 15-1, South Africa lost three wickets in the morning session.

Mitchell Starc, nursing a tendon injury to the blood-stained middle finger on his bowling hand, produced a fast yorker to remove Sarel Erwee lbw for 21 at 47-2. Ten runs later, Scott Boland had Theunis de Bruyn (28) caught at second slip as cracks continued to appear in the Proteas’ brittle batting lineup.

Those cracks widened when Khaya Zondo was run out in demoralizing fashion for one at 65-4 after Bavuma pushed to mid-off and called Zondo through for a risky single.

Bavuma and Kyle Verreynne (33) fought hard to add 63 for the fourth wicket before Boland (2-49) removed Verreynne lbw at 128-5 in the fourth over after lunch.

Marco Jansen (five) fell in the same fashion to spinner Nathan Lyon 16 runs later, following a video review.

Bavuma was involved in a second run out, theatrically turning his back on Keshav Muharaj (13) who was forced to give up on an attempted third run through cover and failed to regain his ground at the striker’s end at 174-7.

A wild slog from Bavuma was caught at mid-on in the following over as Lyon claimed his second victim of the innings and Kagiso Rabada (three) also skied an attempted slog, leading to his departure in Lyon’s next over at 177-9.

Anrich Nortje and Lungi Ngidi entertained the crowd with some big hits as they added 27 for the last wicket, which fell before the tea break on day four. Medium-pacer Cameron Green claimed a career-best 5-27 in South Africa’s first innings of 189. All-rounder Green also scored an unbeaten 51 in Australia’s reply of 575-8, retiring hurt for six with a broken right-index finger before returning to share a century partnership with wicketkeeper Alex Carey (111) for the eighth wicket.

Green has been ruled out of the third test.

Opener and man-of-the match David Warner, who scored 200 in his 100th test, along with half-centuries from Steve Smith (85) and Travis Head (51), gave Australia a solid foundation before the late-order heroics of Green and Carey allowed captain Pat Cummins to declare with a 386-run advantage on the first innings.

The victory was Australia’s first test series win at home against South Africa since 2005-06. The Proteas were triumphant in 2008-09, 2012-13 and 2016-17.

Starc took 1-62 off 18 overs in a lion-hearted performance and is expected to focus on being fit for Australia’s test tour of India in February.

Police on Wednesday registered a case against firebrand BJP MP Pragya Singh Thakur for her alleged inflammatory speech at a convention organised in Shivamogga recently by a pro-Hindu outfit.

The case has been registered at the Kote police station, based on a complaint by Shivamogga District Congress Committee president H S Sundaresh, officials said.

According to police, the case has been registered against the Bhopal MP under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on the ground of religion, and race) and 295A (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs).

Thakur had on December 25 said Hindus have the right to respond to those who attack them and their dignity as she spoke about the killing of Hindu activists.

Speaking at the Hindu Jagarana Vedike’s southern region annual convention here, she had also told the gathering to give a befitting reply to anyone who “infiltrates our house”.

“Keep weapons in your homes. If nothing else, at least keep the knives used to cut vegetables sharp… Don’t know what situation will arise when… Everyone has the right to self-protection. If someone infiltrates our house and attacks us, giving a befitting reply is our right,” she said.

TMC spokesperson Saket Gokhale and Tehseen Poonawalla, whose Twitter bio describes him as a venture capitalist and political analyst and consultant, on Tuesday had filed complaints against Thakur with Shivamogga MP G K Mithun Kumar for allegedly making “hate speech”.

However, stating that the complaints were received through the mail, the SP had asked them to appear before the jurisdictional police officer for the complaint to be registered.

Following this, the local Congress leader on Wednesday complained.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Wednesday assured the Legislative Council that he would direct the Police Department not to arrest Uddhav Thackeray-led party MLA Nitin Deshmukh.

Anil Parab of the Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray-led party had raised the issue of Deshmukh who was booked under section 353A.

Deshmukh accompanied by his supporters had reached Ravi Bhawan on Wednesday to attend a meeting at the official residence of the Leader of the opposition in the legislative council Ambadas Danve.

The meeting was called by Uddhav Thackeray. Upon reaching Ravi Bhawan, Deshmukh was asked to take an entry pass for his supporters to get access.

However, after initially agreeing to take the entry pass for his supporters he later refused, culminating into a heated argument.

The issue was also raised in the legislative assembly by Sena MLA Bhaskar Jadhav.

Replying to him, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis informed the House that Deshmukh was booked under 353 A as he used cuss words and tried to assault the police

CBI custody of Chanda Kochhar, Deepak Kochhar and Videocon founder Dhoot extended till Dec 29

Videocon Loan Fraud Case ICICI Bank

A special Central Bureau of Investigation court here on Wednesday extended till December 29 the CBI custody of former ICICI Bank CEO and MD Chanda Kochhar, her husband Deepak Kochhar and Videocon group founder Venugopal Dhoot in connection with a loan fraud case. The probe agency had arrested the Kochhars last Friday after questioning them briefly. Dhoot was arrested on Monday.

The CBI, represented by special public prosecutor A Limosin, told the court that considerable time was lost in hearing food-related and other applications, including the visit of family members, during the previous remand.

Therefore, the agency requires their custody for two more days to probe to further confront the accused with each other in order to ascertain material facts of the case, he said.

The Kochhars and Dhoot were produced before special judge S M Menjoge at the end of their earlier remand on Wednesday.

While pressing for their remand, the probe agency submitted that the accused persons are required to be interrogated thoroughly on the voluminous documents involved in this case.

The trio are further required to be interrogated to unearth the “criminal conspiracy” with other unknown public servants and private persons. Opposing the CBI’s plea, advocate Kushal Mor, appearing for the Kochhars, submitted that therr is no change in grounds for seeking the custody as they are the same as the previous ones. There must be some progress to seek further custody, he added.

Mor reiterated that the entire arrest is in violation of law and it is illegal as sanction was not sought before arresting the accused. Any subsequent action will not make it legal and they should be released, he submitted.

Advocate S S Ladda, representing Dhoot, also submitted that there should be some indication of progress and remand can never be granted by matter of right. Is there any statement to the fact that during this (previous) custody they found any new material, based on which they are seeking further custody, he argued.

In the entire remand application, there is nothing to show that they have found new material, the advocate added. After hearing both sides, the court extended the custody of the Kochhars and Dhoot till December 29.

The CBI had named the Kochhars and Dhoot, along with companies Nupower Renewables (NRL) managed by Deepak Kochhar, Supreme Energy Private Limited (SEPL), Videocon International Electronics Ltd (VIEL) and Videocon Industries Limited, as accused in its FIR registered in 2019 under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections related to criminal conspiracy and the Prevention of Corruption Act.

The CBI has alleged that ICICI Bank had sanctioned credit facilities to the tune of Rs 3,250 crore to companies of the Videocon Group promoted by Dhoot in violation of the Banking Regulation Act, RBI guidelines, and credit policy of the bank.

According to the CBI, a sanctioning committee headed by Chanda Kochhar in 2009 approved a term loan of Rs 300 crore to VIEL in contravention of the rules and policies of the bank by abusing her official position as a public servant. The day after the loan was disbursed, Dhoot transferred Rs 64 crore to NRL from VIEL through SEPL.

Why does India always lack a  “Happiness Index”?

Happiness
Why does India always lack a  "Happiness Index"? 11

India is a country with a lot of complications and criticisms; the biggest democracy is under a silent dictatorship. People are divided on religious beliefs and political ideologies. How can we expect happiness across nations?  World Happiness Report that has been presented by the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network for the past decade. 2022 saw the 10th edition of this report crown Finland as the happiest nation in the world. Interestingly, Finland has been leading the list for the fifth time; however, India has ranked much lower on this list at 136. Nepal ranks at 84, Bangladesh at 94 and Pakistan ranking at 121. Sri Lanka has bagged number 127 and all these nations have ranked above India, while the only South Asian country to rank lower than India is Taliban-ruled Afghanistan that bagged the last spot among 146 countries. India’s ranking has improved from previous years

These are the people who depends upon government to help them out from their melancholy, they depends upon government for basic needs, they don’t give dam to environment or population all they need is 3 times meals and a roof to live under but it’s shameful even after more than 75yrs of independence we are not able to even achieve that. We have ration shops which are supposed to give ration to people for minimal charges but in actual they give up the major portion of it to other grocery stores and keep very low adulterated amounts for people. Child abuse and rapes have rampant, woman is not safe and even animal are getting molested in the recent past. There are people who slog for an entire day but hardly manage their daily meals. Hunger index is worrisome.

There is another class of people who are always in a dilemma whether to live in India or to move out, they are the one who always pay taxes. These are the people who travel for hours in day time to reach work and back home. These are the people where divorce rates are increasing day by day; this is the class of people where children are depressed and divested.  They spend their entire life saving on illnesses.

People get killed in the name of religion, caste creed and most of the time due to political vendettas. Think tanks are put behind bars, journalists are under attack, and whistle-blowers are killed in broad daylight. There is no education policy in place, no jobs and no resources. The societies where rich become richer and poor remain poorer. There is huge social and economic inequality. And then there is gender inequality, growing prostitution, drug addiction and dubious activities. An average of hundreds of people get duped every day by one or the other reason.

We live for others not for ourselves- This is one of the most importantfactors why we are unhappy. Our Parents spend more than they can afford on a wedding because they think their social reputation is at stake. People are doing everything to prove something to other people but not to themselves. The burden on society is so much that they basically start adjusting our lives and start sacrificing their desires which eventually leads to extreme unhappiness.

Right from going to the office daily and learning for academics, the enormous queue. Commute and everything is a problem and this leads to cut throat competition in every sphere. This is again due to the huge population and lack of willingness of respective governments, administration and public hospitals.

To a certain extent, too many languages, too many cases, too many differences and still trying to get accommodated is very tough, though we say unity in diversity and all that…even for necessities like water/dams there are fights between various states and the legislation system is very weak. Biased judiciary and time taking justice system is another issue. Over-crowded jails and thousands of under- trails languished in it. Legal system is so important and it is very weak in India. Justice, sorting of issues, duration of cases, property/corruption and scam management has to improve so that the general public are happy. The importance of this department is paramount and unfortunately its effectiveness is very less here in India. Father of all other problems is corruption. Unless there is clean governance by all parties and a happier resolve for getting issues sorted without corruption we have a long struggle. India has huge talent, Human resources, manpower, technology and quite efficient know-how then… where else lies the problem? Implementation!

Hope one day we overcome all odds and see our country at the peak of the happiness index.

A special court has allowed NCP leader Nawab Malik to sign documents pertaining to his bank account after it was told that he was not receiving his salary as a MLA pending necessary compliance.

Malik was arrested in February by the ED in connection to an alleged money laundering case.

He was then a minister in the Maha Vikas Agadhi government. His lawyer, Kushal Mor, told the court on December 23 that while Malik is supposed to receive salary in his bank account, the account has not been operational since his arrest.

He added that since the government changed in June, Malik’s salary has not been credited.

Mor said that a few procedures have to be completed to make the bank account functional but Malik was unable to do so, as he is in jail.

The lawyer sought permission for Malik to sign bank forms along with an authority letter to his official personal assistant.
