The Uddhav Thackeray group of Shiv Sena has questioned the Election Commission’s decision to allot the name Balasahebanchi Shiv Sena to Shinde faction.

Sena MP Anil Desai asked how the Shinde faction was getting everything it wanted and how its predictions were coming true. “The EC is playing a big role in the country’s democracy.

They have made a decision (about party symbols and names), and we are accepting it. But there have been many reactions on social media. The EC must also take note of those,” Desai said.

CPI MP writes letter to PM Modi stating ” It is giving undue prominence to Hindi in order to make it India’s dominant language”

Communist Party of India (CPI) Rajya Sabha MP from Kerala Binoy Viswam has written to Prime Minister Narendra raising objection against the “11th Report of the Committee of Parliament on Official Languages” saying the report gives undue prominence to Hindi in order to make it India’s dominant language.

In his letter to PM Modi, Viswam said, “I write to raise my strongest objection against the ’11th Report of the Committee of Parliament on Official Languages’ that gives undue prominence to Hindi in order to make it India’s dominant language. As a nation of multiple languages, the imposition of Hindi to the exclusion of others is deeply offensive and threatens the importance of the 21 other official languages recognised in the 8th schedule of the Constitution.”

The Upper House MP claimed that the recommendations in the report echo divisive and dangerous positions that will cause irreparable damage to the ‘Idea of India’.

The report’s central tenet of ‘Hindi for Hindustan’ is an outright rejection of India’s diversity and recommends the imposition of Hindi in all Central government institutions ranging from educational institutions to public offices, he said.

Such a move, Viswam said will disproportionately affect non-Hindi speaking students who constitute a large segment in prestigious institutes such as IIT or IIM from pursuing their education. “Further the recommendation to take disciplinary action against public servants who do not use Hindi is another example of the reports underlying agenda and lays the ground for stroking great upheaval in the country. The imposition of a singular language to represent the entirety of the Indian people has been the cause of widespread opposition and discontent from the beginning of Independent India to fan that fire is a dangerous and ill-advised move,” wrote the CPI leader.

Viswam further said that several Supreme Court judges, constitutional law scholars, historians, politicians, and other prominent citizens have re-iterated innumerable times that the temptation to impose uniformity has to be resisted and that India’s plurality must be protected.

“In light of the above, I strongly urge you to withdraw this report and seek a broader consultation on this sensitive subject before any such policy decision is made. India is a land of multiple cultures with each citizen’s mother tongue representing a part of their identity, to impose a secondary status on a person’s mother tongue will always be met with strong opposition and cause problems for India’s unity,” he added.

Congress veteran leader and party’s presidential candidate Mallikarjun Kharge said that his name was not suggested by the party supremo Sonia Gandhi and dismissed the speculations of receiving support from the party’s interim president.

Kharge said that Sonia Gandhi had never suggested his name for the party president position and called it a rumour.

“Sonia Gandhi suggesting my name for the president position is all a rumour, I have never said this. She has clearly stated that anyone from the Gandhi family will neither be a part of the election nor support any candidate,” Kharge said on Tuesday.

Notably, Shashi Tharoor and Mallikarjun Kharge are up against each other in the race for the post of Congress President.

“Someone has spread this rumour to defame the Congress party, Sonia Gandhi and me. She has clearly stated that she will not participate in the party elections nor will she come in support of any candidate,” Kharge said. Kharge further said that the members of the party have elected delegates which are 9300 in numbers which will vote for the candidate and the one with the majority, would be elected. Talking about voters of Uttar Pradesh, he said that there were a total of “1250 voters” (delegates) in UP.

“I am not here to see the chances for me, the candidates that have asked me to contest will be responsible for my victory,” he added. Earlier on Sunday, Kharge had said that he is fighting the Congress Presidential polls because the condition in the country is very “bad” and he wants to “fight” them.

“I want to fight because the condition in the country is bad. Modi and Shah are doing politics where there is no place for Democracy. Agencies like CBI and ED are weakening. To fight them I need to have power. That is why, on the recommendation of delegations, I am fighting the polls,” Kharge had said.

Digvijaya Singh pulled out from the race earlier and extended his support to Kharge, who he said is a senior and respected leader of the party, and against whom he “cannot think of contesting”. Singh was the second Congress leader to pull out of the race after Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot announced he would not contest the elections following the political turmoil in his state. With the Gandhis not running for the top post, the grand old party is all set to get a non-Gandhi president after over 25 years. The last date for withdrawal of nominations is October 8. Voting will take place on October 17 and the election results will be declared on October 19.

The MP from Wayanad Rahul Gandhi is currently leading Bharat Jodo Yatra- the 3,500-km march from Kanyakumari to Kashmir, covering as many as 12 states. The Yatra started from Kanyakumari and will end in Kashmir the next year by covering 25 km every day.

CM Eknath Shinde said “Shivsainiks are happy after the allotment of a new name and symbol by the EC”

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Tuesday exuded confidence in winning the upcoming Andheri East Assembly bypolls with the new ‘Two Swords & Shield symbol’ approved by the Election Commission, and said that Balasaheb Thackeray’s Shiv Sainiks are “happy”.

The remarks of the Chief Minister came after ECI on Tuesday alloted the ‘Two Swords and Shield symbol’ to the Eknath Shinde faction of Shiv Sena a day after the group was allotted ‘Balasahebanchi Shiv Sena’ (Balasaheb’s Shiv Sena) as the name for the group of the party.

“This ‘Two Swords & Shield symbol’ is an identity of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and people know about it. Balasaheb’s Shiv Sainiks are happy today. We will contest the election on this symbol and we will win,” Shinde said. The Shinde faction had submitted ‘shining sun’, ‘shield and sword’ and ‘Peepal tree’ as its election symbol options to the Election Commission (EC) for the upcoming bypoll in Andheri East assembly constituency next month.

However, the EC said that the symbols furnished by the Shinde faction are not from the list of free symbols as notified in the Commission.

Giving the reason for not allotting Sun/Surya/Sooraj as a symbol, the Election Commission said, “The Name of the symbol resembles with already reserved symbols ‘Sun (without rays)’ and ‘Rising Sun’ of recognized Political Parties namely ‘Zoram Nationalist Party’ (recognized party in the state of Mizoram) and ‘Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam’ (recognized party in the state of Tamil Nadu and Union Territory of Puducherry) respectively.”

“The Commission has decided to declare Do Talwarein aur Ek Dhal (Two Swords & Shield)’ to be a free symbol and allots it as the symbol to be allotted to the candidate set up, if any, by your group in the current bye-elections and till the final order is passed in the Dispute case number I of 2022,” the EC added in a letter to Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.

Whereas the ‘flaming torch’ (mashaal) election symbol was allotted to the Uddhav Thackeray faction of Shiv Sena, rejecting their claim to the ‘Trishul’ citing religious connotation. The Election Commission also allotted ‘ShivSena – Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray’ as the party name for the Thackeray faction.

Meanwhile, the ECI rejected ‘Trishul’ and ‘Gada’ (mace) as election symbols claimed by the two factions of the Shiv Sena, citing their religious connotation. Moreover, the election body noted that the ‘Rising Sun’ election symbol sought by both factions was reserved for the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

The poll panel had earlier barred the rival groups led by former Maharastra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and Chief Minster Eknath Shinde from using the symbol “Bow and Arrow”, reserved for Shiv Sena, in the upcoming Andheri East bye-election on November 3.

With the deadline for shops and commercial establishments in Mumbai to put up Marathi signboards coming to an end, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) from Monday started initiating action against those who have not done so yet. The BMC’s fourth deadline to shops for setting up Marathi signboards expired on September 30.

“We have started issuing notices to the commercial establishments. Every shop is being given seven days after the date of notice issuance for setting up the new signboard. If they fail to do so during that time, we will file a case in the court against the owners of the establishments,” said Deputy Municipal Commissioner (Special) Sanjog Kabre.

The present provision states a fine of Rs 2,000 per staffer will be imposed on shops. Kabre said if the shop owners choose to pay the fine on their own, then the BMC may not approach the court. “At present, there are more than five lakh shops and commercial establishments in Mumbai and only less than 50 per cent of these have Marathi signboards. We will take photographs of the shops as evidence as we send them notices,” he said.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and other leaders are on the “Bharat Jodo Yatra” which is now in Karnataka and many people were a part of it in which some youth, children, senior citizens and other people of different age groups were seen. The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has filed a complaint against the Congress leader for involving children in the “Yatra”. Some leaders also claimed that the “Yatra” is being one as they are not left with any other options.

Bhalchandra Shirsat BJP leader told Afternoon Voice that “Congress party is not receiving support of people from other age groups and this is why they are using children to gain attention in this Yatra and Rahul Gandhi purposely calls those children schools which are being known to him to be a part of this Yatra”.

When speaking to the other leaders they have stated it is only “Yatra” and whoever is coming on the way is meeting them.

“People who are coming on his way so he is meeting the people and it should not be considered as child labour as he is not telling them to work. When it is about complaint the NCPCR will be looking into the matter and why involving children is considered as wrong in the Yatra?” said Clyde Crasto from Nationalist Congress Party.

Some leaders also said these are false allegations made by the opposition on the congress party and on this issue going on at Bharat Jodo Yatra in Karnataka “There are false allegations made by the BJP as they are not happy with the “Yatra” and we are only connecting people through yatra. This is not meant for any election purpose” said Congress leader Sachin Sawant.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has started Bharat Jodo Yatra on September 7, 2022 at Kanyakumari and has visited many places and spoke to many people as they are also raising issues related to inflation, unemployment and other issues faced by people.

The death toll in the blast that occurred at Uran Gas Turbine Power Station (GTPS), on Sunday, has increased to two after the death of a critically injured contract worker Vishnu Patil (43), who succumbed to his 85 percent burn injuries, during treatment at National Burns hospital in Airoli on Monday morning.

The first casualty was a junior engineer at GTPS identified as Vivek Dhumale (30), who was declared brought dead at National Burns hospital in Airoli, where he was rushed in a critical condition after being initially taken to Indira Gandhi hospital at JNPT.

Meanwhile, an engineer BN Singh had had a lucky escape as he sustained minor injuries during the blast. Since, he was walking in the opposite direction of the boiler where the booster pump blast occurred, informed Sunil Ingale, chief engineer at GTPS.

Ingale further informed, “The family members, relatives and local villagers of the deceased in the tragic incident at GTPS are demanding a compensation of Rs 50 lakh to the kin of the victims. We had a meeting with their delegation and have assured them maximum compensation as per the government policy for Mahagenco employees and contract workers in case of accidental death while on duty. However, Rs 50 lakhs compensation demand is actually not feasible for the government organisation, but GTPS administration sympathizes with the mourning kin of the deceased.”

On compassionate grounds, the wife of deceased junior engineer Vivek Dhumale will be given a suitable job in GTPS, the delegation has been assured. Also, the other deceased contract worker Vishnu Patil will also be provided monetary compensation as per the policy of Mahagenco.
