The judicial custody of Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut in connection with the Patra Chawl land scam case has been extended till October 17 on Monday.

Sanjay Raut’s custody was previously extended on October 4 for 14 days (till October 10, today) by a Special Court in Mumbai.

Raut was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on August 1 in connection with alleged financial irregularities in the redevelopment of the Patra Chawl in suburban Goregaon in Mumbai.

After being in the ED’s custody initially, the Shiv Sena leader was sent to judicial custody for 14 days on August 8. On August 22, a special PMLA court extended Raut’s custody till September 5 which was further extended till September 19 and then till October 3 and 10.

ED officials raided the Shiv Sena leader’s home on July 31, and after detaining and questioning him for several hours and arrested him on August 1.

On June 28 this year, Sanjay Raut was summoned by the ED in connection with the prevention of the money laundering case pertaining to the Rupees 1,034 crore Patra Chawl land scam.

Back in August, the wife of Shiv Sena MP was also summoned by the agency in connection with the Patra Chawl land case.

The MP’s wife Varsha Raut was summoned by the central agency after the ED officials raided the Shiv Sena leader’s home and after detaining and questioning him (Sanjay Raut) for several hours, arrested him. Raut is a close aide of former Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray.

According to sources, ED officials seized Rs 11.50 lakhs of unaccounted cash from his residence during the raids. Soon after the ED officials detained him in connection with the Patra Chawl land scam case, the Shiv Sena leader said that he “won’t be cowed down”. Raut is being probed in connection with the re-development of Mumbai’s Patra Chawl.

In April this year, the ED had attached immovable properties worth Rs 11.15 crore, including a flat at Dadar, held by Sanjay Raut’s wife Varsha and eight land parcels at Kihim near Alibag, jointly held by the latter with Swapna Patkar.

Amid reports of multiple explosions across Ukraine including in its capital city Kyiv on Monday morning, the country’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused Russia of trying to “destroy” Ukrainians and wipe them “off the face of the earth”, local media reported.

At least five people were killed in the attacks on Kyiv and authorities in the cities of Kharkiv, Lviv, Mykolaiv and Dnipropetrovsk also reported missile and rocket attacks, CNN reported.

Local media also reported explosions from Zhytomyr, Khmelnytsky, Dnipro and Ternopil. Kyiv Independent quoted advisor to Ukraine’s Interior Minister, Rostyslav Smirnov stating that the attack on central Kyiv has killed eight people while injuring 24 persons.

As of around 8:45 am, six cars caught fire and over 15 cars were damaged as a result of the attack on Kyiv’s Shevchenkivskyi district. This recent attack comes in the backdrop of the recent attacks on the Crimea bridge that reportedly killed three people and Russia’s weekend attack on the city of Zaporizhzhia that killed residents as they slept in their homes and injured at least 70 people.

Monday’s blasts were the first major attacks on the capital Kyiv since June. Video footage circulating on social media showed cars ablaze in the middle of a downtown street in Kyiv, reported Washington Post.

On Saturday a truck exploded on Kerch bridge, causing seven fuel tanks of a train heading to the Crimean Peninsula to catch fire. This led to the partial collapse of two spans of the road bridge, according to media reports.

Shortly afterwards, the Kremlin said President Vladimir Putin signed a decree on enhancing security measures for the Crimea bridge. In the decree, Putin also called for securing the energy bridge and the gas pipeline connecting the peninsula with mainland Russia.

Media reports said that Putin plans to hold an operational meeting of his Security Council today. The bridge was opened in 2018 by Putin, four years after Moscow annexed Crimea and was designed to link the peninsula to Russia’s transport network.

The 19-kilometre bridge, which runs across the Kerch Strait and connects Crimea with mainland Russia, consists of a railway and vehicle sections. It became fully operational in 2020.

On Saturday, at least 17 people were killed and 40 others injured after a rocket struck Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia area. Acting Mayor of Zaporizhzhia Anatoly Kurtev said that in the attack, five houses were destroyed and apartment buildings were damaged, CNN reported.

Shiv Sena leader Chandrakant Khaire has said that he is not afraid of the case registered against him for allegedly making objectionable remarks about Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and he will fight alone.

Speaking to reporters here after returning from Mumbai on Sunday night, Khaire accused Shinde of breaking the Shiv Sena organisation, which the party’s founder Bal Thackeray had taken efforts to built.

Based on a complaint lodged by district unit chief of the Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) Rajendra Janjal, a case has been registered against Khaire at Satara police station for allegedly making objectionable remarks against the chief minister.

“I don’t know if any offence has been registered against me. But if the chief minister has broken the Shiv Sena organisation, should we worship him? Bal Thackeray took efforts to build this organisation and these are the returns being given to him,” the Sena leader said.

Khaire, a former Member of Parliament from the Aurangabad Lok Sabha constituency, is a loyalist of Uddhav Thackeray, who heads the party’s other faction.

“People from the Shinde faction criticise Uddhav Thackeray now. He is the one who distributed portfolios to them (in the previous government). Shiv sainiks are angry now,” he said.
