Cyber Cell – Most flopped initiative in India

social media, social networks, social, cyber cell, cyber crime, police, delhi police, fruad, online fraud, online scam, delhi, cybercrime, cyber crime

Delhi Police had set up a dedicated center to analyze the content of various social media websites in an effort to monitor provocative postings and take preventive steps to check any negative fallout. The decision to set up the center was taken in the backdrop of the increasing influence of social media, which was misused by anti-social elements. I wonder how many times this initiative was taken by police in India as this is the most flopped venture by all state cyber crime police. In India, Cybercrime cell officials are flooded with complaints that do not even have a flake of connection with their field, handling cases of sexual harassment, threats, and abuses just because a cell phone was used. The police wing diverts such cases back to police stations. In such complaints, just NC (Non-Cognizable offence) is registered but no action ever is taken, and if the police want to take action even then there is no special mechanism to deal with such issues in the department. The police department lacks the expertise to deal with cybercrime. The overt absence of cyber in these crimes and that the nature of these offences are covered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and not Information Technology (IT) Act, 2000. In a number of complaints, police officials of different police stations transfer the cases to the cyber cell merely because the accused issued threats or abused someone over a cell phone. The cyber cell is here only to provide them assistance, like who was using the cell phone, on whose name the number was registered, and what was the location of the offender.

In the recent past, Social media has turned a little brutal in spreading violence and hate. Already the cybercrime cell is struggling hard to deal with complaints related of sexual harassment, abuse, and offensive languages that the local police can directly deal with. Inciting hatred disseminated on social media is an ongoing dangerous trend. A hate campaign against one another, from a political party to a leader and journalist to a common user is on the rise. There are many examples of how social media is slipping towards provocation are proliferating day after day, some just spread false information to instigate hatred against each other. Many times, simple issues are made complicated and discussed. When arguments are harsher than the basic conversation there starts the quarrel. We have forgotten to debate or do reasoning. Today we are divided on social networks; we talk about unity, united nation, and brotherhood but there are many issues that have alienated us in groups. Incitement to hatred can occur when an individual or group threatens to harass a person or a group of people because of their orientation or ideology. That could be in words, pictures, videos, and even music. It also includes information posted on websites. Laws are written to allow freedom of speech/expression and to define illegal content there is no proper mechanism. Many people don’t register such complaints. For example, if you are against a leader or a political party, you raise the issues concerning her or his performance and governance, scam scandals, or brutality that they committed to this nation and its people. We are bypassing the freedom given to us and violating the rules calling our leaders, waitresses, mass murderers, Maun Mohan to MaunModi, Feku, Pappu penguin, etc. above all there are many religious hate posts that have brought shame to the nation and unrest to human lives.

The attacks are very personal. However, even today such fabric does not seem to be illegal in our country. To find a solution for such issues, the government launched many initiatives whereby people at large protested against this. Only about 164.81 million Indians have access to the internet, and only 143.20 million over mobile phones according to official figures released by the Telecom and Regulatory Authority of India in March 2013. Given this scenario, both the reach in terms of positive and negative impact is still quite limited in India. The prime minister, however, chose to focus on social media’s role on fanning hatred. The majority of chief ministers, then, favor social media regulation. Ideas were thrown forward included taking action within the current legal framework, setting up ‘social media laboratories’ to monitor posts under intelligence departments, and even mobilizing NGOs and prominent citizens to counter social media anecdotes. The irony is that almost all these ministers who were endorsing restrictions on the social networks could not control their own workers going haywire on this platform. If these ministers or the government bring censorship on social networks, how will they promote their agenda? How will they survive without it? However, the real question is the kind of regulation India chooses to favour? In China, a new law can charge people with defamation if a rumor started by them gets reposted over 500 times. In India, current laws allow citizens to go to court over information that has even caused them “annoyance” under Section 66A of the law. To ensure this is not abused, the government has now mandated that a senior police officer looks at individual cases before allowing charges to be filed to avoid nuisance cases. The constitution of India allows for freedom of expression, although with restrictions. The potential for abuse is too great. Unfortunately, as it seems today – social media has become a war filed. It is a virtual battleground, forgetting that we have real-world breathing somewhere.

Anyways there is a lot to talk about on social networks, like Maligning people, False Propaganda, Abuse and threat, fake profiles; Non-political tweetrati’s suffer from censorship. One person holds multiple accounts, with no information. Remaining anonymous they create a ruckus and random assaults and harassment. In the world of viral promotions and millions of fake profiles, how can we ever truly measure the value of social media sites? There are two kinds of Fake followers, one having multiple accounts by one user. They are active and take part in interactions. Another is having twitter followers bot. They can add to the follower count but of no use. They get added and get dissolved, pretty much dummy followers. Now, Under the new programme, police will monitor content on popular social media sites like Facebook and Twitter.

These days YouTube is a new platform that supports hate speech, abuses, and religious attacks but nothing is much done to stop it. Meanwhile, in a pronouncement that reiterates the constitutional protection to freedom of speech and expression, the Supreme Court has said that unwitting or careless “insults” to religion should not be prosecuted as this would amount to a misuse of the law. Concerned by the misuse of Section 295A of IPC, which provides up to three years’ jail term for hurting religious sentiments, the Supreme Court limited the applicability of the penal provision to deliberate and malicious acts rather than casual observations that are not driven by malicious intent. Maybe this is the reason, netzines lack deterrence and they randomly attack each other’s deities.

A nasty video uploaded titled “Black Day 5 August,” by a YouTuber named Heer Khan was seen abusing Hindu Deities, she abused Goddess Sita and called her sex worker and referred to Ayodhya a brothel, has been arrested by Uttar Pradesh police. Khan had also called Lord Ram a son of a sex worker in the video. Heer Khan is a singer and YouTuber who posts videos regularly on her YouTube Channel.

The Prayagraj police came into action after huge outrage on social media by Hindutva activists and netizens demanding her arrest. Hashtags like #ArrestHeerKhan had started to trend on Twitter.

In a video full of offensive adjectives and expletives against Hindu Gods. She claimed in her video that if anyone says anything against Islam, Muslims will not sit quietly. Her video was in reply to 11 August 2020 incidence, the nephew of an Indian National Congress state legislator Akhanda Srinivas Murthy posted a derogatory remark on Facebook that targeted the Islamic Prophet Muhammad.

The post went viral in the area and people began gathering in front of the legislator’s residence in Kaval Byrasandra in protest, demanding that the accused be arrested. The police sent two teams from the DJ Halli station to detain the nephew. Heer Khan claimed in her video that if anyone says anything against Islam, Muslims will not sit quietly. She went on ranting extremely derogatory, abusive, and sexually explicit words against Hindu Gods throughout the video. This has enraged Hindus as it hurt their religious sentiments.

The YouTube channel in which these videos appeared started uploading videos on 4th January 2020. In the first video, Heer Khan said that she used to have an old channel which was deleted. Though she uses burka to hide her face in a majority of the videos, in a couple of videos she posted, in the beginning, her face is visible. In a video that Heer Khan uploaded on 24th August 2020, she claimed that she had been abusing Hindu Gods for the last two years and no one had taken action against her. She is then seen threatening that if anyone dares to say anything against her and Islam, the women in their family will be r**ped. She also mentioned the recent Bangalore riots in her video and threatened similar “actions” if anyone says anything against the Prophet. Heer Khan had showcased her “love” for Pakistani terrorist Masood Azhar. Azhar is the mastermind behind several attacks in India, including the 2001 Indian Parliament attack, 2008 Mumbai attacks, 2016 Pathankot attack, and 2019 Pulwama attack.

The video clip was shared on Twitter by a netizen who asked for the source and location of the women to file a complaint. Additional Director-General of Police Dr. Sandeep Mittal noticed the video and notified UP Police to take action accordingly. Earlier in the day, the Lucknow Police had taken cognizance of the video and replied to ADG Mittal that they had directed Cyber Cell to take necessary action against the said Youtuber.

2020 – Four months to go

2020 Four Months to GoThe year is undoubtedly one of the most challenging years of our existence. Five months have passed since. However, you still have the remaining four months of 2020. You can choose to dwell on the past and feel sad or miserable or you can take stock and control of what the future holds for you.

The vaccine will come when it comes into the market. Till then here is what you can do to keep your chin up and look towards the horizon to make the biggest reset. No analogy could be better than nature. No matter how wild the fire or how harsh the storm, nature has a unique and unstinting resolve, to get back up. The same weather-torn landscape thrives and prospers within months and years. The lesson I take is that so do you and I.

1. Sift the beautiful pieces:

Look around you for 5 things, 5 people, 5 strengths and 5 learnings from the past that got you going. This is your carry forward capital. You may argue there isn’t much but take a piece of paper and write it down. If you are the many who reached 5+5+5+5 then you are, unarguably blessed. Pick the pieces to weave a stronger fabric of faith and joy in the coming months.

2. Essentialism:

The past five months may have taught you what you can and cannot live without. Now, is the time to declutter, detox, and square your debts. Lighten the physical and emotional load to invest in change. Place your finances under the microscope and rework your financial strategy. The goal does not change, the route might, with a restructured timeline perhaps. Every rupee saved adds to the corpus. Ask yourself, do you really need to order a takeaway, 3 times a week? How important is a fancy phone with features you barely use, anyway? The answers can centre the compass needle towards the direction of your victory.

3. Be decisive about growth:

The way things were aren’t going to remain the same. The terrain has shifted; paving the way for new opportunities. Make choices that strengthen you. Your key challenge will be to silence the doubts and uncertainties that prevent you from moving forward. Mindless webinars are not going to cut it. Use your time to hone that one skill that gets you on top of the game. If sales, is your weakness, have conversations with the best salesperson, and learn from them. If you are hunting for a job, begin networking with people who can support you in opening doors. If you are a spouse juggling work from home, work for home and home-schooling, ask for help instead of playing the martyr. Take decisions that lead you closer to your goal.

4. Self-care:

While you do whatever it takes to go through the next four months, make sure you do not compromise on You. You may feel caged and fettered in the past 156 days. Seek time to smell the roses, walk on the sand, potter in your balcony garden, or go for a jog with your pet. Pick one hobby which releases is a stressbuster and do more of it. Focus on sneaking joy into your life in tiny, myriad ways because your health is the most vital asset, now.

For all things take their course, eventually in the process of healing and revival.

At least 2 dead, 19 still missing in Raigad building collapse; PM Modi expresses grief

At least two persons have been reported dead after a five-story residential building collapsed in Raigad district of Maharashtra Monday evening.

The incident was reported in the Kajalpura area of the district, whereas many as 19 people are still feared trapped under the debris of the collapsed structure, while 7 have been rescued so far. The search and rescue operations at the site of the collapsed building still continue.

The Tarek Garden building, which was around 10 years old, collapsed at Kajalpura in Mahad tehsil around 7 pm, an official said.

There were around 40 flats in the building, the official said, adding those rescued were shifted to a local hospital at Mahad, which is around 170 km from Mumbai.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday expressed grief over the building collapse in Maharashtra’s Raigad district and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured.

“Saddened by the building collapse in Mahad, Raigad in Maharashtra. My thoughts are with the families of those who lost their dear ones. I pray the injured recover soon. Local authorities and NDRF teams are at the site of the tragedy, providing all possible assistance: PM,” Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) tweeted.

Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray spoke to the district officials and asked them to expedite the rescue and relief Raigad District Collector Nidhi Choudhari said that the man’s body was recovered from the debris around 10 pm.

As the building began to collapse, around 70 people in the building ran out and managed to save their lives, the official said.

“We also came to know that many families are not residing in the building as they went to their native places due to the coronavirus-induced lockdown,” she said.

Sonia Gandhi forced to remain as Congress Chief

Sonia Gandhi had told her party workers that she does not want to continue as president, which was an interim arrangement after her son Rahul quit last year. She had asked the party to look for a non-Gandhi chief. However, it was decided in the Congress Working Committee meeting that Sonia Gandhi will remain the Congress’ interim president, for now, the meeting concluded after 7 hours. During the meeting, it was also decided that the new Congress chief will be elected within the next six months.

Sonia Gandhi’s letter asking to be relieved as Congress president was read out at the start of a crucial meeting of the party’s Working Committee a day after a letter was written by 23 top leaders calling for “a full-time, visible leadership” emerged. The “uncertainty” over the leadership and the “drift” in the party has demoralised workers and weakened the party, said the letter signed by senior leaders like Kapil Sibal, Shashi Tharoor, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Prithviraj Chavan, Vivek Tankha and Anand Sharma. The letter reportedly stresses that the Gandhis will always be an integral part of “collective leadership”.

KC Venugopal began the meeting saying it was called to “discuss urgent matters” and read Sonia Gandhi’s letter asking the party to start the process of looking for her replacement. The letter, demanding “collective decision-making”, called into question the leadership of the Gandhis, who have led the Congress for much of its 134-year history. The CWC’s virtual meeting is set to begin with Sonia Gandhi delivering the opening address and announcing her decision to resign. Congress leaders say the “dissidents” who wrote the letter on August 7 – including former union ministers and prominent MPs – are likely to come under attack from the Gandhi loyalists, many of whom have either come out publicly in their support or have written to Sonia Gandhi pleading with her to continue leading the party.

The letter has split the Congress down the middle with leaders like Amarinder Singh, Bhupesh Baghel and Siddaramaiah coming out in support of the Gandhis. “Sonia Gandhi should continue as long as she wants; Rahul Gandhi should take over after her as he is fully competent,” Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh said.

Many believe the letter was intended to thwart attempts to bring back Rahul Gandhi as party chief. Over the past few weeks, many Congress leaders have pitched for his return. Rahul Gandhi is firm on not returning as Congress president. He is keen to continue to work for the party and fight the BJP-led RSS, as Gandhi family loyalists took on the leaders who signed the letter. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is also clear she will remain as a general secretary and not take on any bigger leadership role in the party, sources said.

This is the first time since 1999, when Sharad Pawar walked out over Sonia Gandhi’s foreign origin, that the Congress has seen an organized revolt against the Nehru-Gandhi leadership. Sources say going by the Congress playbook, there may be a “unanimous resolution” reposing faith in Sonia Gandhi as chief.

With the Gandhis, however, appearing determined to step back, the meeting may see the Congress being forced to commit to the task of appointing an interim president and launching internal elections, which involves an electoral college. A team or committee is expected to be formed to find a way forward and guide the party in the process of organizational elections and “help bring internal democracy within”.

Congress has no other option than Gandhis as Chief of Party?

Political capital is not eternal, and Sonia Gandhi is one such example in Indian politics. Once a savior, a person who rejected the position of the Prime Minister plainly and simply, today comes across as a dynast that has failed to gauge the change in society and decline of her organization simultaneously. The longest-serving president of India’s grand old party Congress finally announced her retirement and asked the party to find the right head for the post. The emotional and very public attack of the struggling Congress leadership was the latest indicator of how quickly the power of the long-dominant party has shrunken since it was routed in May’s election. After dominating the front pages of the country’s newspapers for years, news of the party has fallen deep inside the papers. Some media houses became a mouthpiece of the ruling party and carried the agenda of restlessly humiliating Gandhi’s daughter in law.

Sonia, born in a small village near Vicenza, Italy, was raised in a Roman Catholic family. After completing her primary education at local schools, she moved for language classes to Cambridge, England, where she met Rajiv Gandhi and later married him in 1968. She then moved to India and started living with her mother-in-law, the then-Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi. Sonia Gandhi, however, kept away from the public sphere, even during the years of her husband’s premiership. Following her husband’s assassination, Gandhi was invited by Congress leaders to lead the party, but she denied it. In 1997 after much pleading from the party, the following year, she was nominated for party president and elected over Jitendra Prasada. Under her leadership, the Congress went on to form the government post the 2004 elections in coalition with other center-left political parties. Gandhi has since been credited for being instrumental in formulating the United Progressive Alliance (UPA), which was re-elected to power in 2009. Gandhi declined the premiership following the 2004 victory; she instead led the ruling alliance and the National Advisory Council.

Throughout her career, Gandhi presided over the advisory councils credited for the formation and subsequent implementation of such rights-based development and welfare schemes as the right to information, Food security bill, and MNREGA, as she drew criticism related to the Bofors scandal and the National Herald Case. Her foreign birth has also been a subject of much debate and controversy. Gandhi’s active participation in politics began to reduce during the latter half of the UPA government’s second term owing to health concerns. She stepped down as the Congress president in December 2017 but returned to lead the party in August 2019. Although she never held any public office in the government of India but managed her party with the utmost courage and compassion. Acknowledging the rise of the BJP and admitting that the youth resolutely voted for Narendra Modi, her letter points out that the erosion of the support base and losing the confidence of the youth are matters of serious concern.

Sonia Gandhi alias née Maino; remained in office for nineteen years, she was seen as the most powerful politician of India from 2004 – 2014 and variously listed among the most powerful people and women listings by magazines. In 2013, Sonia Gandhi was ranked 21st among the world’s most powerful and 9th most powerful woman by Forbes Magazine. In 2007, she had been named the third most powerful woman in the world by the same magazine and was ranked 6th in an exclusive list in 2007. She was ranked 12 in 2012 in Forbes’ powerful people list. Sonia was also named among the Time 100 most influential people in the world for the years 2007 and 2008. New Statesman listed Sonia Gandhi at number 29 in their annual survey of “The World’s 50 Most Influential Figures” in the year 2010. She was at the helm of international media attention, but form 2013; the anger was created against Congress on the false charges of corruption; even today, none of those black money and corruption are proven against them. There were several attacks on her son-in-law, but nothing was proven against him. Anna Hazare, Baba Ramdev, and so call many anti-corruption crusaders successfully carried out the preplanned agenda of creating hate against the longest-ruling party, and simultaneously, brand Modi got introduced as BJP’s PM candidate. BJP won the 2014 elections with a huge mandate not because of its merits but by creating negative perceptions against Congress and especially the Gandhi family.

Six years after the party’s electoral rout pushed it into a continuing descending spiral. A lot of blame has been heaped on Rahul Gandhi, who has already conceded defeat but in essence, today’s Congress is in shambles because Sonia Gandhi’s model of politics has distorted with the generational shift in its core leadership. When Sonia Gandhi took charge of the Congress, the organization was demoralized but existed in many states with plenty of leaders. Her work was primarily focused on getting the Congress families together all across India.

She did not overhaul the organization. She only ensured that state satraps are aligned to the leadership who otherwise were not interested in listening to each other. The politics of regional satraps also worked because of mystique surrounding Sonia Gandhi. Sonia had the deep sympathy of people because of the tragic circumstance in which Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated. Her lack of work on organization and focus on individual-family connection politics not only added to the downfall in 2014 but also repeat defeat in 2019. The Congress calculation was again hinged on a number of regional and local dynasts that would be able to retain their seats. In 2019, the only party won, and individual candidates barring odd few lost. In a way, 2019 has ended Sonia Gandhi’s model of politics completely. Many would say as to where does Rahul Gandhi stand in all this? I would say that his tinkering with NSUI and Youth Congress acted as a catalyst for the demise of the system, which was already rotting from within. Instead of picking and pushing fresh talent, elections made the process expensive, casting out poorer and not so rich aspirants.

CBI no Sherlock Holmes: Looking at CBI’s track record, can we expect the truth in Sushant’s case to be revealed

CBI, Central Bureau of Investigation, Mumbai Police, Bihar Police, CBI for SSR,

After so much of uproar and many television debates and pressure by media finally, Sushant Singh Rajput’s death case is handed over to CBI. The investigating agency, which was once termed as a “caged parrot” by the Supreme Court, had been left red-faced by the courts in many high-profile cases, putting a question mark over the probe conducted by it. CBI team has reached Mumbai to investigate actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s death case. The central probe agency will examine the autopsy and forensic reports, and the actor’s flat in suburban Bandra. They will recreate the death scene Can with the help of forensic experts. Whether the agency will be able to solve the case is a big question. The Mumbai Police, on the other hand, has refused to surrender to Bihar Police’s position that it should be allowed to carry out an investigation of its own. The Mumbai Police maintains that the Bihar Police is investigating a matter that is outside its jurisdiction. The CBI, after the Supreme Court upheld the Bihar government’s move, is now gearing up to probe actor Sushant Rajput’s controversial death for which actress Rhea Chakraborty has been named prime accused of abetting his suicide.

The agency has so far investigated a handful of such cases. In none of them, the CBI could prove that the suspect(s) drove the deceased to suicide. Apart from Rajput’s, the agency is currently investigating Bollywood actress Jiah Khan’s death in which Sooraj Pancholi stands charged for abetting her suicide. The CBI filed a chargesheet in the case but nothing much has moved in the trial since 2017. Khan’s mother Rabea believes her daughter was murdered. She accuses police of botching up the initial probe under what she calls was pressure from some top Bollywood celebrities.

Majeed Memon, who is a former Rajya Sabha member and a prominent lawyer, said “If we look at CBI’s track record for the so-called politically hyped 2G scam to Dabholkar murder, so far nothing is so convincing that they came up with. On many occasions, Supreme Courts have shown dissatisfaction in their inability to probe the cases”. Just because this death is overhyped, CBI is probing it. Let’s see how far they dig the truth and please all those having different insights.”

The tug of war has been going on between the governments of Bihar and Maharashtra over the case. Maharashtra has been contending that Bihar had no jurisdiction in the matter since the death took place in Mumbai. Mumbai Police have so far recorded statements of 56 people including Sushant Singh Rajput’s sisters, his friend and actress Rhea Chakraborty and some other film personalities in connection with his death. Sushant’s father KK Singh on July 25 lodged a complaint with Patna police against Chakraborty and her family members, accusing them of abetting the actor’s suicide. An FIR has been registered by Patna police against Rhea Chakraborty and others under various IPC sections.

Majid Memon also said, “Secrecy has to be maintained when a crime is at the investigation stage. Publicizing every development in the process of collecting vital evidence adversely affects the interest of truth and justice,” he added.

Justice Hrishikesh Roy directed the Mumbai Police to hand over the case records and evidence to the central agency and asked the Maharashtra government to cooperate in the investigation. The court’s judgement was based on a plea filed by actor Rhea Chakraborty to transfer a first information report of abetment to suicide registered against her in connection with the death of Rajput from Patna to Mumbai.

Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh said, “The law is clear. If the incident has not happened in our jurisdiction, we register a ‘zero’ First Information Report (FIR), and transfer it.”

“We are awaiting a copy of the order once we get it, we will examine it and decide further course of action. We have asked our advocates in the Supreme Court to send us a copy at the earliest,” he added.

This was also the argument that Rhea Chakraborty’s lawyer made before the Supreme Court while challenging the power of the Bihar government to recommend CBI probe into the death of Sushant Singh Rajput.

When was the last time you heard the CBI won any case?

CBI, Central Bureau of Investigation, Bihar Police, Mumbai Police, Ranjan Gogoi, Sushant Singh Rajput, SSR, Kangana Ranaut, Arnab Goswami, Republic TV, Justice for SSR, CBI in Mumbai, SC, Supreme Court

If you remember the speech of then the CJI Ranjan Gogoi during the 18th Late Dharamnath Prasad Kohli memorial lecture organised by CBI, in New Delhi, Gogoi said weak human resource in the CBI is a major concern. The gap is both qualitative and quantitative. He also mentioned that the 15 per cent posts in the executive department, 28.37 per cent in law officers’ department and 56.17 per cent in technical officers’ department are lying vacant in the agency. This is a matter of concern as it results in overburdening of work, which not only reduces the effectiveness and efficiency of the agency personnel but also induces psychological distress. Inadequate investment in the force is also a major issue. Insufficient investment in personnel training, equipment or other support structures adversely hampers professional discharge of duties. High-quality research and training are crucial for maintaining an effective modern police force and CBI. He expressed many concerns over CBI personnel and their abilities. Not only Rajan Gogoi but the honorable Supreme Court judge denounced in a fully packed New Delhi courtroom the elite Central Bureau of Investigation as a “caged parrot” and “its master’s voice”. On various occasions, CBI is dubbed as a tool in the authority’s hands. Their credibility is questioned several times because in none of the high-profile cases they could draw some conclusion.

The CBI has always faced an extraordinary crisis of trustworthiness. If you remember the fight between CBI Director Alok Verma and Special Director Rakesh Asthana spilled into the public domain when the CBI registered an FIR against Asthana and others, including Deputy Superintendent of Police Devender Kumar, on charges of accepting the bribe from a person related to the meat exporter, Moin Qureshi, whose case Asthana was probing. After the registration of the FIR against him, Asthana rushed to the Delhi High Court for quashing the FIR and obtained a temporary respite from action against him until the next hearing. The blame game and attacks within the department exposed a brutal corruption in CBI. After much humiliation and scuffle, the BJP’s warlords intervened and somehow the matter was pushed to cold storage. People have short memories, and they quickly forgot this episode.

So far CBI was disastrous in various investigations such as #AarushiMurderCae #SheenaBoraMurderCase #JiahKhanKilling #NarendraDabholkarMurderCase # GauriLankeshKilling and CBI also filed to trace the missing JNU student Najeeb Ahmed. Najeeb Ahmed, an MSc first-year student went missing from the Mahi-Mandavi hostel of Jawaharlal Nehru University nearly four years ago on October 15, 2016, following a scuffle with some other students, allegedly affiliated to the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the previous night. The CBI could not find any clues about him and the case was abruptly closed.

In a unique tug of war between the police of Bihar and Maharashtra over the right to probe the death of the Sushant Singh, Centre had informed SC that Bihar government’s recommendation for CBI probe into the death case of the actor has been accepted. They believe that the CBI is the world’s finest investigation agency. But the problem in death cases is that the initial investigation plays a very vital role in shaping up the entire search. In Jiah Khan as well as the SSR case, the initial investigations were conducted by the police, the CBI has to rely on the evidence collected by the Police. Without the Mumbai Police findings, CBI has hardly any role to play. To deal with ongoing pressure they might even arrest Rhea Chakraborty for a day or two but they will not be able to hold her in jail for a long time. Her defense lawyer is a very famous and learned man, he might be studying all the consequences closely. He must be prepared for all the investigations, in such a scenario what one can expect from CBI? What if that girl comes clean even after CBI investigations? Who will pay for the damages done to her?

If suppose CBI once again flops in drawing the assumed conclusion, they will simply blame Mumbai and Bihar police to save their image? If you remember Arushi Murder crime in Noida back in the early 2000s. That case was an open and shut case but due to lack of sheen investigation, that case still remains a mystery. CBI accused Arushi’s parents but Rajesh and Nupur Talwar were exonerated by the Allahabad High Court in the double murder case that remains unsolved even today. Well, that was murder but here it is killing a self and establishing abetment of suicide is very grim because just speculating about someone is not enough evidence to prove the point. The matter is being probed by Mumbai police. The investigations are not yet complete.

There are many questions that, why does Bihar Police come into the picture? What does the Bihar government have to do with this? The crime has taken place in Mumbai. Suddenly the matter gains impetus. It is raised in Bihar assembly; within 24 hours it is transferred to CBI. I think the script has already been written. According to it, the demand was made to transfer the case to CBI. Some people in Bihar asked Sushant’s father to file an FIR in Bihar. If this was all pre-decided by those in power, why should we disbelieve that all this saga will continue till Bihar election and then forgotten as happened in many other cases? This is not about hiding anything. This is the matter of the stature of the Mumbai Police. Mumbai Police is world-renowned. This is an attempt to defame the Maharashtra government. Don’t similar incidents take place in other states like UP, Bihar or Gujarat? Should all such cases be transferred to CBI? What kind of madness is this? How many of those crying now for justice have really watched his movies when he was alive and helped him become a megastar? He was not seen or known by the very own so-called crusaders who are asking for justice.

Now, Supreme Court has approved for CBI probe in the case, the court reasoned that such a probe will retain public confidence and trust in the impartial working of state agencies, end the acrimonious allegations of political interference and bring justice for innocents, who might have been the target of vilification campaigns. The top court upheld the jurisdiction of both Bihar and Maharashtra to probe Rajput’s death, but it did not transfer the case to Mumbai Police and allowed CBI to carry on with the probe. It said the allegations relating to criminal breach of trust and misappropriation of money prima facie indicated the lawful jurisdiction of the Patna Police. At the same time Mumbai Police, which launched inquest proceedings into the unnatural death, could also register a case if it suspected of a cognizable offence, the top court added. In order to avoid uncertainty and confusion in the event of Mumbai Police also deciding to simultaneously investigate the offence, the court found it suitable for the CBI to take over the case. But at the last court also said, a CBI probe would provide justice to both — Rajput’s father and Rhea Chakraborty. During the hearing, Chakraborty did not object to the CBI investigation but was skeptical about the “Bonafede of the steps taken by the Bihar government and the Patna Police. Let’s see who has the last laugh.

As COVID-19 pandemic engulfed the country, it seems not only humans, but even Gods are going low-key, wearing masks, avoiding crowds and going digital this year for Ganesh Chaturthi which starts on Saturday.

As Maharashtra continues to battle the COVID-19 pandemic, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray urged people of Maharashtra to avoid crowding during the festival and follow guidelines about the height of idols and their immersion. Mumbai is still battling heavily with COVID-19 cases and in such circumstances, people should follow the norms and keep safe.

To pass this message loud and clear, many Ganesha Idols would be wearing masks this year. Borivali East, Navghar Ganesh Pandal told Afternoon Voice, “If people see Idol wearing a mask, it will give them a reminder that they cannot take the situation at ease, it’s way of spreading the message”.

With everything going virtual in these pandemic times, Ganesha will also give darshan on Zoom, Facebook and Google platforms during the upcoming Ganesh Chaturthi festival.

On the other hand, Mira Road station Ganesha would be arriving crushing the corona under its feet. This year Ganesh pandals across Mumbai would be adopting various themes related to the ongoing pandemic. As far as the gathering is concerned, people would be scanning and taking safety measures before they seek darshan. Maharashtra has the highest burden of Covid-19 cases in India with over 1.13 lakh confirmed cases. As Ganeshotsav, is among Maharashtra’s most popular festivals, it will still be celebrated this August but maybe devoid of its usual pomp.

BMC in a circular and said that devotees cannot immerse the idols on their own. The civic body has issued instructions indicating that the city has 70 natural ponds and 167 artificial ponds have been created.

“It is true that the festival will not be celebrated with much fanfare this year. Since the threat from coronavirus is not yet over, there will be no crowds and no processions. We will have to take all precautions and celebrate the festival in a very simple way”, said Thackeray, who held a review meeting on a video conference on the law and order situation during upcoming Ganesh festival. Thackeray said everyone needs to think of how the festival can be celebrated more simply.

“We have started ‘Mission Begin Again’ in the state. So, we will have to take all the steps cautiously. We will take care that the Ganesh festival tradition is not broken under any condition but we will also have to remember social responsibility. We should celebrate the festival in such a way that will set an example before the world”, said the chief minister further urging Ganesh mandals to exercise caution and cooperate with the government.

According to the Brihanmumbai Sarvajanik Ganesh Utsav Samanvay Samiti (BSGUSS), Mumbai has about 12 thousand mandals in Public Places and Housing societies, but this year just 7,200 applications are received for mandals.

Thackeray also thanked Ganesh mandals from Pune and other places who have decided to celebrate the festival in a low-key manner. He also thanked them for their contribution to the Chief Minister Relief Fund and for organizing various social initiatives.

Maharashtra govt has issued some guidelines to be followed:

• The Maharashtra government made it mandatory for all ‘mandals’ to take prior permission from the concerned municipality or local authority for Ganeshotsav celebrations.
• The government has capped the maximum idol height at 4 feet Even the idols installed at home cannot be taller than two feet.
• Ganesh Mandals to postpone immersion of idols.
• Processions to mark arrival and immersion of idols will not be allowed
• There should be no crowds during daily aarti’ and noise pollution norms must be followed

COVID-19: Ganesh Chaturthi and swigged up Mumbai

Ganesha, Lord Ganesh, Ganpati, Ganesh Chaturthi, COVID-19, Lockdown, Mumbai, Maharashtra

Our favourite Ganesha is arriving in Mumbai, some have already reached. The mighty festival of Ganesh Chaturthi is one of the most celebrated festivals in Mumbai and India. In honor of Lord Ganesha – the lovable elephant-headed God is illustrious all over India. Many Hindu families across India and abroad celebrate this festival with much grandeur in their homes. Meanwhile, the worship is limited to a bow, an aarti and the rest is gaiety. Maharashtra has reported the highest number of positive cases and deaths. This has forced organisers of the annual Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations to make it low key affair. This is to minimize the infection spread since this event sees heavy public gathering across the pandals (event ground) across Mumbai, Pune and other regions. Areas like Parel, Chinchpokli and Byculla, which are near Lalbaugcha Raja Mandal, have several buildings and lanes identified as containment zones by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.

According to the Brihanmumbai Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Samanvay Samiti (BSGSS), an umbrella body of Ganesh mandals in the city, there are a total of 11,400 Ganesh pandals across the city. Each pandal on an average spends around Rs 7 lakh on organizing the 10-day festival and the total turnover estimate of all pandals is over 800 crores in Mumbai during festival time. The donations have been reduced by almost 30 per cent given the fact that redevelopment projects in the city have been stuck for more than a year and many developers have backed out from giving huge donations. Many businesses and corporate companies got shut down and many small-scale industries suffered so the collection from all these sources has reduced to 50 per cent. Also, the political leaders have avoided putting up the banners and posters that have affected the revenue of the pandals. They can now get funds only through the events organized by the pandals and sponsored by a few entities. Moreover, in recent few years, the festival has been much politicized. So, all the politicians make sure they use the platform to reach out to the public.

The celebrations’ content has changed long back. It is no longer a platform for gathering to and participates in discourses on nationalistic, pro-Independence issues that Tilak created. When Lokmanya Tilak was in great distress and worried about our country’s freedom. He used to sit at the bank of Girgaum Chowpatty and wondered how to collect people. While sitting on the bank of seashore he used to make idols and people used to stop by to see it. British did not restrict such collective movement. So, from there he got an idea to celebrate Sarvajanik Ganesh Utsav. Tilak was the first person to install large public images of Ganesha in pavilions and him was the one who established the practice of submerging all the public images on the tenth day of the festival. Ganesh Chaturthi soon started seeing the community participation and involvement, in the form of cultural events.

Later on, this became an important festival during the Peshwa rule in Maharashtra. It acquired a more organized form all over India during the Swaraj movement, when Lord Ganesha was chosen as a rallying point for protest against British rule, because of his wide appeal as “the God for Everyman”. The strongest movement to evoke nationalism, through religious passions, was the organization of Ganesh Chaturthi in Maharashtra, which inspired feelings of Hindu unity in the state. Once India became Independent, it had no such use anymore. But it endured as a tradition but only in its run as an annual event. It has, of course, a political content, but rather the perverse one. Gradually, these events became business and Ganesh pandals become richer than the business tycoons. They indulge is political findings to sponsorships and rarely, some contribution to social work. This year hardly any money collection, because

Devotees on Zoom, Facebook and other online platforms can view Ganpati Bappa during the Ganesh Chaturthi festival held this year amid the coronavirus pandemic. The 10-day festival, which starts on Saturday, has been cut short to one-and-a-half days at many places in Delhi. Organisers of Ganesh Chaturthi in the national capital region are busy creating social media links for virtual darshans and ensuring health protocol for those who will be at the mandals.
