Julia Louis-Dreyfus calls ‘SNL’ environment ‘very sexist’ during her time

Julia Louis-Dreyfus“Veep” star Julia Louis-Dreyfus has opened up about her time at “Saturday Night Live”, which she says was very sexist, brutal but informative.

Louis-Dreyfus says being miserable on the comedy show taught her to value the “fun-meter” of her subsequent jobs and that helped her a lot in navigating her showbiz career, reported a leading website.

“I was unbelievably naive and I didn’t really understand how the dynamics of the place worked. It was very sexist, very sexist. People were doing crazy drugs at the time. I was oblivious. I just thought, Oh wow. He’s got a lot of energy’,” she told Stephen Colbert during a Q&A at the Montclair Film Festival held in Montclair, New Jersey.

Louis-Dreyfus joined the variety show in 1982, becoming SNL’s youngest female cast member at that time. She went on to share the stage with the likes of Eddie Murphy, Martin Short, and Billy Crystal.

“It was a pretty brutal time, but it was a very informative time for me,” she said.

“I learned I wasn’t going to do any more of this show-business crap unless it was fun. I don’t have to walk and crawl through this kind of nasty glass if it’s not ultimately going to be fulfilling, and so that’s how I sort of moved forward from that moment. I sort of applied that fun-meter’ to every job I’ve had since and that has been very helpful,” she added.

Interestingly, her time on SNL helped her land one of the most iconic comedy shows of all time.

A few years after she left the show, writer Larry David sent her a script for a show titled “The Seinfeld Chronicles”.

“Jerry’s laughing the whole time. I mean he can’t act at all and so he’s got a huge smile on his face when anyone is saying anything. And if I looked at him and saw him doing that, then I would [crack] up. Anyway, it took a long time to shoot those things because I was ruining all the takes. And so that was my favorite thing,” she recalled.

When you deal with history, difficult to cut things: Kriti on length of ‘Panipat’

kriti sanonActor Kriti Sanon says it was nearly impossible for the team of “Panipat” to trim down its run-time because when one deals with history, it’s difficult to cut a lot of events.

Directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, “Panipat” released last on Friday. The Arjun Kapoor-Kriti starrer historical drama has a duration of nearly two hours fifty minutes.

When pointed out that there has been some criticism with regards to its length, Kriti told reporters, “When you’re dealing with history, it’s difficult to cut a lot of things because you’ve to show facts. When there are a lot of characters, which there were in Panipat war, it takes time to establish them.”

The actor said a period love story is comparatively easier to trim as the story revolves around just those characters.

“The pace in historical, period films is always slow in the beginning, unless it’s a love story, which is easier with just a few characters and life revolving around them. Here, there’s so much that’s happening. I don’t think there was anything which we could’ve let go, which wasn’t important or relevant to the times,” the actor said at the red carpet of Star Screen Awards on Sunday.

There were reports that Kriti might feature in Farah Khan’s “Satte Pe Satta” but the actor said, “I’d love to but there’s nothing that I know of, to be very honest.”

“The year started with ‘Luka Chuppi’, then ‘Housefull 4’ and now ‘Panipat’ is getting such amazing reviews. I’ve been getting great response for my character and it took me a while to sink it in! Because it was my first historical, I wanted to make sure it’s convincing and people don’t see Kriti in it,” she added.

A full-blown unemployment crisis is looming over the Indian economy

Unemployment Crisis Economy Slowdown,Economy Slowdown,Unemployment,Crisis,Economy,EconomicThe employment growth in India, over the last few years, came down significantly as the fresh data released by the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) showed that unemployment rate in the month of October jumped to 8.5 per cent, which is the highest in over three years.

A new academic research paper released by the Centre of Sustainable Employment also concluded that there has been a significant decline in total employment in India between 2011-12 and 2017-18, reported English daily. The research paper by Santosh Mehrotra and Jaiati K Parida stated as, “However, due to sharp increases in enrollment at every level of education over the noughties, it was expected that post -2012 total employment would increase, particularly in the non-farm sectors. This would have sustained the structural transformation process which began after 2004-05. But unfortunately, total employment during 2011-12 and 2017-18 declined by 9 million. The research further states that this happened for the first time in India’s history.

It is really ironical noting that Coimbatore Municipal Corporation posted a vacancy for 549 sanitary workers. What followed was that 7000 highly qualified applicants even some of them with engineering and graduate degrees applied for the job. The corporation witnessed the overwhelming turnout of 7000 candidates.

Similarly, few months back, Chennai witnessed an unusual event when around 4600 of youth sent their application for 14 posts like sweepers and sanitary workers. The applicants had professional qualification like B.Tech, M.Tech, Master of Business Administration. These are evident indications which show how drastically the country is suffering from job crisis.

Though the government constantly has been refuting the grim of job data but the facts and figures can’t be avoided any more. Therefore, now the government should take an initiative to overcome the high prevalence of unemployment and figure out the derivers of the job crisis. In this regard, it is worth to mention a book titled ‘Job crisis in India’ written by business journalist Raghavan Jagnnathan. The author in his book pointed out factors and reasons behind this decline of employment. He attributed that the absence of skills required in the highly technical nature of jobs is a big factor. Another aspect of this is that in the majority of cases the skills or training acquired by the youths do not match or suit the core demand of the job. So at first the government must step up for reformation, innovation and renovation of the standard of the education in universities and colleges.

The National Employability Report 2019, reveals, “The employability of Indian engineers continues to be painfully low with more than 80 per cent engineers unemployable for any job in the knowledge economy”. The report further said that past nine years made no changes on aggregate level and Indian education system needs systemic long term changes in higher education. The report looks quantitatively into the reasons for low employability and makes detailed recommendations for change.

It shows that majority of engineering graduates do not have enough skills to compete in the knowledge market. Then what about Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) which was launched in July 2015 and Rs 1,500 crore had been allocated with an endearing aim to equip youngsters with handful of skills. Again in 2016 a renovated version of PMKVY was launched aiming at providing training to 10 million youngsters and Rs 12,000 crore had been allocated but the results are yet to be seen. The government must find out a proper solution for this crisis before the situation gets more worsened.

Economic slowdown

Despite the various measures taken by the government, the slowdown of the Indian economy has deepened further in July–September 2019, with the gross domestic product (GDP) growth in the second quarter of the financial year 2019–20 (Q2 FY 20) at 4.5 per cent, compared to 5 per cent in the first quarter. The growth rate has now slowed down for the sixth consecutive quarter, declining by 3.6 percentage points during this period. In the current GDP series, the growth rate at 4.5 per cent is the lowest since that recorded in the fourth quarter of FY13, which was 4.3 per cent. What this points to is that the underlying private demand is weak, as the scenario has been progressively getting worse, despite higher government spending. This is because consumption has failed to pick up, and private investment has remained stagnant.

Fire tragedy claims 43 lives

The massive fire tragedy in Delhi’s Anaj Mandi area claimed the lives of 43 people, injuring 56 people. It is a very dreadful event, which reminded the Pulwama attack and we are losing sons of India again and again and are not controlling such as a problem, even though the Delhi government immediately announced Rs 10 lakh for dead and Rs 1 lakh and free treatment for injured people.

When TV serials turn noxious

There was a time when we had only Doordarshan with its own good programmes which was clean and harmless. Even the serials aired during that time had it’s own values and most of them were meant for the whole family. Today the scenario has changed and it is only with anxiety and anguish that one can sit in front of the TV. The serials are still there and instead of one or two now it is hundreds aired by various channels and in different languages!

Parents and elders who get lured to these serials definitely have to give a thought for the little ones who knowingly and unknowingly watch the serials along with adults containing only matters meant for the latter. Serial makers whose only aim is to increase the TRP rates and make a big cash are least bothered about the matter stuffed in their soaps which most often contain  illicit adult relationship  conflicts and clashes. Serials today are endless and the serial makers only aim in creating such dragging soaps just to get sponsorship profit and high viewing rate. The long dragging monotonous serials have an upper class air about them with hot bedroom, board room quarrels which serve no purpose for the audience especially the younger generation. Many of these serials give a wrong picture of adult relationships and the society in general. Let serial makers go in for short good serials with fine family stories showing a positive note to the society which urgently at present need a remedy to escape from  all sorts of pressure. It is high time the I & B ministry rein in serials and serial makers. A censorship board for serials is a must today.

A 30-year-old man killed his two minor children, a 3-year-old daughter and an 18-month-old son in Chembur on Sunday morning. The police have registered an accidental death report and sent the three bodies for autopsy at Rajawadi Hospital.

Police said the incident took place in the wee hours of Sunday. The deceased man identified as Dinesh Yadav was a residence of Kasturba Nagar in Chembur whereas the kids were identified as Netra and Pranay.

According to police, the man and his wife would often get into heated arguments. Five days ago, his wife walked out after the duo argued. And he was frustrated that his wife would leave the house after every fight.

The incident came to light when Yadav’s brother, who stayed in the neighborhood, noticed that his doors were closed late into the morning and sensed that something was wrong.

The police said, “Nobody answered the doorbell for a long time, after which the brother along with other local residents broke the door open. They saw that the two kids were lying on the bed with Yadav’s body hanging from the ceiling by a dupatta.”

The prima facie of reports suggests that the kids were not strangled but poisoned by their father. However, the police are waiting for the post-mortem report.

“On the primary basis, we have registered an accidental death case and are further investigating the matter. We suspect that Yadav had killed the two children by poisoning them and later killed himself. We will see the post-mortem report to ascertain the reason behind the murder and further add a murder section against Yadav if he is responsible for the death of the children. Also, we will take the statement of the family members to know the exact reason behind the brutal act,” the officer added.
