Fourteen-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal has surged back to the top four in the latest ATP rankings after clinching a record-extending fifth Madrid Open title.

Nadal has moved up one place to the fourth spot in the world, thus leapfrogging Swiss maestro and 18-time Grand slam champion Roger Federer, who has not played this clay season and still has not confirmed his participation at the Roland Garros.

The Spaniard consolidated his flying start to the clay-court season as he battled past an impressive Dominic Thiem 7-6(10-8), 6-4 in the finals of the Madrid Open on Sunday.

Nadal also ended a seven-match losing streak against World No. 2 Novak Djokovic in their semi-final on Saturday and the victory saw him level Djokovic’s record of 30 Masters Series titles.

Meanwhile, British tennis maestro Andy Murray continues to remain at the top spot and maintains a lead of 3,515 over second-placed Novak Djokovic, despite both currently experiencing massive slump in forms.
