Upgrade security of railway stations

Security and vigil have been beefed up at all railway stations in Mumbai. The vulnerability of the suburban local trains and stations as terror targets is an open secret. The Mumbai police deserves praise for putting up a brave show of searching some passengers’ bags, but it is a Sisyphean task. Railways stations are not airports and so not every piece of luggage could be scanned. It is important to keep some perspective on the risks posed by terrorism to the Indian rail passengers. While Railway Police has also been instructed to keep vigil on stations, tracks and trains care should also be taken that the innocent citizens are not harassed. The stations which receive lot of footfalls like Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST), Dadar, Thane, Kalyan, Kurla, Mumbai Central and Dombivali and are also halts for outstation trains must have had their security upgraded so as to ensure no unwarranted situation emerges in the city. It should be ensured that that the existing CCTV cameras which are already installed over Mumbai suburban railway stations for round-the-clock surveillance against suspicious activities/persons and unclaimed objects, are fully functional and monitored on day-to-day basis.
