Our country’s performance at the Rio Olympics may have been dismal till date but our sportsmen gave off their best which unfortunately was not good enough for winning a medal. Olympics is not only about excellence but also about nerves where our sportsmen falters competing at that level of competition. No sportsmen would underperform at the Olympics on purpose and I respect the efforts of our athletes who gave off their best with practically very little encouragement from our sporting federations. Cricket in our country is a religion but sadly other sports are neglected in our nation.
Our attitude and approach needs to change if we want to produce world champions and make an impact at the Olympics. Advertisement spends by companies should be utilised to adopt budding sportsmen and develop them into sporting greats which in the beginning would be an investment that would bore fruits in the long run. The government too should earmark a substantial fund for sports and we must have sports universities in our country where the talent of sportsmen are exploited as it is being done in academics. There is no dearth of sporting talent in our country but it needs to be optimally exploited for fruitful results. Olympics is not over yet and I am keeping my fingers crossed and hoping that we win some medals in the coming days!
