Business in the name of drought relief

Hundreds of crores of rupees are being collected in the name of drought by every Tom, Dick and Harry today but one is not sure of the authenticity of such charitable drives and how the funds would ultimately be used for drought victims. The government should monitor such activities as noble souls do come forward to contribute their bit but funds seldom reach those in need of aid. Manipulation of funds always happen during national calamities and it has become a business for many to even make money in the name of charity.

Why should people donate their hard earned money to various charities when money is siphoned off by middlemen? Why can’t we not have a single fund which could be named as the ‘Prime Ministers drought relief fund’ and every contribution earmarked to it? It is easy to monitor a single fund and the government can even give tax concessions or other benefits to donors so that large amount can be collected for drought victims.

Also, drought affected people need water as an urgent measure to survive. Cannon trains or other transport which could deposit water to these drought affected areas is the need of the hour. Money collected could also be used for infrastructure to build dams and other water storage facilities so that we are better placed to deal with drought in future. Prime Minister Modi should personally look into the drought relief so that money donated for this purpose reaches the actual beneficiaries and for the right cause!
