Interlinking of rivers

The recent flood in Madhya Pradesh, Assam, Uttarakhand, Maharashtra is one more wakeup call for us to join all the rivers from north to south at the earliest. Many years ago the renowned expert Dr. Dastoor had already advocated for the ‘Garland Scheme’ meant for joining all the rivers of India as mentioned above. If all the rivers from north to south are linked, it will create job opportunities for lakhs of youth in the future. Besides, there will be minimum calamities like flood, drought, famine etc. This will be the biggest benefit of joining the rivers. It will also boost the water transport and promote irrigation and fishery. In addition, the stock of excess water will be available for sending to the areas witnessing water shortage from any part of the nation to other regions if the rivers are linked.
