Wow! Now save more data while using Instagram; click to know how!

InstagramAllowing users to reduce the amount of data consumed on the photo sharing platform, the social networking service owned by Facebook on Wednesday announced a new opt-in feature. The feature has been designed specifically for emerging markets where data plans and internet speeds may be limited, Instagram said in a statement.

“With this opt-in mode, people across the world can view their favourite content on Instagram with reduced image loading time, by reducing the amount of data that Instagram uses on their mobile phones,” it added.

While the Facebook-owned company doesn’t disclose country-specific user count, reports suggest it has well over 70 million users in India. Globally, it has over a billion users.

Once enabled, videos will not be pre-loaded and high-resolution images will not be downloaded, except in certain circumstances that the user chooses.

Users can choose whether they never want to see high-resolution media or if they want to see such content when they are on Wi-Fi or Cellular/Wi-Fi connections.

“With this data saver feature, we are hoping for an uninterrupted Instagram experience in slow network areas, which in turn will increase people’s interactions with their friends and family,” Manish Chopra, Director and Head of Partnerships, Facebook India, said.

The feature will be available globally for Android users and will roll out slowly over the course of a week.

Slammed for #FreeRidesForHer, Kejriwal govt invites suggestions

Slammed for FreeRidesForHer Kejriwal govt invites suggestionsThe Delhi government has invited suggestions from people on its the free ride scheme for women. These suggestions are to be sent by June 15. On the other hand, women of Delhi are concerned about their security first rather than free rides in Metro and DTC.

According to the Transport department of Delhi government, people can send their suggestions at ndelhiwomensafety@gmail.com. They can also send their suggestions to the Chairman, DDC, Delhi Govt., 33, Shamnath Marg, Delhi-110054.

On Tuesday, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia took a bus ride to get feedback from passengers about the scheme. Sisodia said that he did not find any citizen who was against the idea. According to the government, this move will ensure safety of women in the national capital.

It is worth mentioning that the Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced on Monday that women of Delhi would soon be able to travel free of cost on all public transport. This proposed scheme is yet to get a green signal from the Modi government at the centre. This scheme will cost Rs 700-800 crore yearly.  Kejariwal said, “We are making an effort to start this within 2-3 months.” Aam Aadmi Party came to power in 2015 by winning 67 seats of 70 assembly constituencies. The party lost the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections badly and is trying to gain the support of people.

SP-BSP to again join hands in 2022 UP state polls?

SP BSP AllianceAfter splitting up with Lok Sabha polls gathbandhan partner Mayawati-led BSP, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Wednesday called the SP-BSP alliance a ‘Scientific experiment’ that did not succeed.

“I studied engineering in Mysore. As a science student, I know that all experiments do not always succeed. But still, we give it a trial and learn what is lacking,” Akhilesh said while talking to reporters.

He further said that his respect for BSP supremo remained intact even though both the parties have parted their ways and going to contest the upcoming by-polls individually.

Akhilesh on Tuesday announced that his party would contest all 11 Assembly bye-elections in the state after BSP chief Mayawati announced that her party has decided to contest these elections on its own following the poor performance of SP-BSP alliance in the recently held Lok Sabha elections.

While the gathbandhan had huge expectations, Samajwadi Party had got 5 seats in the state, while BSP got 10 taking the ‘mahagathbandhan’ tally to a dismal 15, far behind the BJP’s 62 Lok Sabha seats in the state.

Replying to whether his party will again join hands with BSP in the state assembly elections in 2022, Akhilesh said, “We are fighting by-elections on our own. After consultation with senior party leaders, we will finalise the strategy for 2022.”

“We can have different paths and different working styles and I would extend my best wishes to everybody,” he added.

Former FIFA prez and the architech of ‘Champions League football’ Lennart Johansson passes away

Lennart Johansson, who oversaw the introduction of the Champions League during a 17-year reign as president of European soccer’s governing body, has died. He was 89.

Sweden’s soccer association said the former UEFA president died on Tuesday after a short illness.

“Lennart Johansson was our biggest international football leader of all time, no Swedish has had a similar influence on football in the world,” Swedish Football Association president Karl-Erik Nilsson said Wednesday.

“He was deeply respected as UEFA president and vice president of FIFA, his leadership has aroused admiration worldwide.”

Johansson was elected to lead UEFA from 1990 to 2007 when he was beaten in the presidential election by former France great Michel Platini. Johansson also served as vice president of FIFA, but lost a divisive contest for the presidency to Sepp Blatter in 1998. Blatter rejected allegations of vote-buying, and the two never saw eye to eye after that.

Johansson said creating the Champions League to replace the European Cup was his proudest achievement at UEFA. It evolved into club football’s most lucrative and prestigious competition, with expansion that saw non-domestic champions given the entry.

Johansson had an award inscribed: “To Lennart Johansson, the father of the Champions League” in an office he kept at Sweden’s national stadium in Stockholm.

“It’s the biggest tournament we have in football for clubs, watched all over the world. We send it to about 200 countries and if you listen to the players about their wish for the future, it’s ‘I would love to be in the final of the Champions League,'” he said in a 2010 interview with The Associated Press.

UEFA was also transformed under Johansson’s rule, from an administrative body into a commercial enterprise managing Europe’s top club and national team competitions. Its headquarters moved from a suburb of the Swiss capital, Bern, to a waterfront facility in Nyon, by Lake Geneva. Johansson was named honorary president of UEFA after losing the presidency to Platini in 2007.

After losing the 1998 vote for the FIFA presidency, Johansson led accusations of financial mismanagement against Blatter over the collapse of ISL/ISMM, FIFA’s marketing partner for almost two decades which left an estimated debt of $300 million when it went bankrupt in 2001.

He backed Blatter’s opponent, Issa Hayatou of Cameroon, when the Swiss was re-elected for a second term in 2002.

Johansson opposed the creep of technology into football to help referees, telling the AP: “This is a game for humans and not for robots.” Born in Stockholm, Johansson always remained loyal to the city’s biggest club, AIK, which he chaired between 1967 and 1980.

He rose through the ranks of the Swedish Football Association and served as its president before becoming UEFA president in 1990. He brought the European Championship to Sweden in 1992, and the Swedish league trophy was named after him in 2001.

Taking care of water woes during summer

Water Crisis In India

Even though we have sufficient monsoon rains and there is sufficient stock in all the water resources, we feel the shortage only because of regular leakage from the water pipe and other wastage by misusing water by the public. Thus, a huge quantity of fresh water is flowing into the sea from the leaking pipes causing shortage during the summer season. April was very hot and the month of May continued to be very hot. Leakage from the water mains is the major reason for the shortage. It is time to curb criminal wastage of water from the water outlets in the satellite city. Penalize the people responsible for pipe leakages and have regular check-ups to prevent water pipe leakage on an ongoing basis and proper maintenance work is to be undertaken periodically.  A disaster management cell must work 24 hours to solve leaking problems regularly.

The water problem is a cause of concern for the people in general and Civic officials in particular. The major reason for the shortage is the failure of the monsoon last 10 years. To add salt to the wound a lot of water is being wasted in the different nodes due to leakage from supply pipes. The increase in a number of sky-scrappers in the vicinity is also a cause for concern. In flats, the residents keep Syntax type tanks to store water for their individual usage and people who have not resorted to such an arrangement are made to suffer. Civic Authorities are just struggling to solve the problems from the grassroots level.  They try their best to plug the holes and prevent water seepage from major pipelines supplying water to the city.

Government machinery has failed to give the people the basic necessity that is water. Multi-storied buildings suffer the most. By issuing permits recklessly, we see flats coming up in every nook and corner. Where is the water for these fresh projects coming up? Optimum usage, avoiding wastage and exploring new ways to stem the rot are needed to bring water shortage problem under control. Water Meter must be installed individually to have control over water consumption, so as to have a check of water wastage from each flat. Flat owners are just reckless in keeping the tap open when they go out. Thus, the water tank gets emptied early creating problems. Erring members in the flat are to be punished and a severe penalty is to be imposed on them. After all, water is precious.

According to International norms, an individual needs 135 liters of water every day, but people use water carelessly. Steps should be taken to make people aware about proper water usage. Big wall posters are to be pasted at the entrance of each building and block to remind people about the severe water shortage. Even a picture of the TAP with water tricking away showing an X at the drop of water from the pipe to keep people aware of the impending shortage.  As worries on water continue, citizens need to look at different ways to conserve water in residential spaces. Simple steps such as bucket baths instead of showers could make a lot of difference. Using water for cleaning cars and water gardens should be dispensed with, immediate effect. Instead of going for wasteful expenses, societies should plan for Borewell and rainwater harvesting as an alternative source of supply. It should be imposed on Building owners to go in for rainwater harvesting as a pre-requisite for allotting plot or for building multi-storied flats. The corporation should plug the water wastage from the pipes and see that the water problem is solved sooner or later. Save Water for the summer season is the campaign going on the city now.

There are so many available sites in building and other parts of the city to plan for rain water storage tanks. Unless we take proper steps to implement the project in right spirits nothing could be achieved. The wastage of rainwater is to be stored and preserved for future use. Not all the rain that falls can actually be collected. Efficiency is usually presumed to be more than 80 per cent depending on system design and capacity. Therefore, a 1,200 square foot roof will collect 1,100 gallons of water on a day with two inches of rainfall. Using this formula and region’s average rainfall numbers combined with an estimated water need, you should be able to calculate the approximate size of your tank or the so-called Barrel System. This takes care of the requirement of a few. Harvesting rainwater in bulk quantities, which can cater to the needs of the larger community, though out the year requires large space in the location. Big Housing complexes can go for such a scheme to cater to the needs of a huge population residing in prestigious complexes.

CSE reveals alarming report, around 1 lakh children die due to air pollution every year

Air pollution has become a national emergency as it is killing one lakh children under the age of five in India every year and is responsible for 12.5 per cent of all deaths in the country, according to a study released on the World Environment Day.

Environment think tank CSE’s State of India’s Environment (SoE) report said that on an average, 8.5 out of every 10,000 children in India die before they turn five, while the risk was higher for girls as 9.6 out of 10,000 girls die before five years of age due to bad air.

“Air pollution is responsible for 12.5 per cent of all deaths in India. Its impact on children is equally worrying. Over 1,00,000 children below the age of five die due to bad air in the country,” the CSE report said.

The think tank said that the government’s schemes to fight air pollution have not been successful yet, a fact also accepted and acknowledged by the environment ministry.

Recently, a senior official at the ministry had accepted that the situation was not a happy one and schemes have not been as successful as they were expected to be.

Earlier this year, global reports on air pollution revealed that over 1.2 million people died in India due to air pollution in 2017.

According to a report by Greenpeace, New Delhi is the most polluted capital city in the world.

The reports, however, were rejected by previous environment minister Harsh Vardhan, who is now Health Minister, saying such studies only aim to cause panic among people and were not true.

In 2013, India had pledged to phase out non-electric vehicles and achieve a target of cumulative sale of 15-16 million hybrid and electric vehicles by 2020.

However, as per the CSE report, the number of e-vehicles till May 2019 was 0.28 million, much behind the set goal.

“While India was one of the first countries to pledge the phasing out of non-electric vehicles, its national scheme to promote the sale of e-vehicles is yet to pick up.

“Against the target of 5-6 million e-vehicles by 2020, the county had 0.28 million vehicles till May 2019,” the SoE, an annual quantified statement of environmental statistics and analysis, said.

The study, which has covered wide range of topics, also said that the country is yet to identify indicators to track its climate change preparedness, a concern which is under the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 2030.

“Climate change poses the biggest economic threat in the world today and features prominently in the UN Sustainable Development Goals 2030.

With just 10 years to go, India is yet to identify indicators to track its climate change preparedness. Of the 13 SDGs the country is tracking, indicators exist for only a handful of the targets,” it said.

CSE said there has been a 22 per cent increase in India’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions between 2010 and 2014.

“This increase has been fuelled by the energy sector, which is responsible for 73 per cent of the total GHG emissions. Besides, India phased out ozone depleting substances such as chlorofluorocarbon by 2011, it shifted to substances such as hydro-chlorofluorocarbon, which have high global warming potential.

India continues to bear the brunt of extreme weather events. In 2018, 11 states recorded major extreme weather events that claimed 1,425 lives, it said.

The report covers state of water, agriculture, health, waste generation and disposal , forests and wildlife.

Regarding the state of forests, it said India recently shifted to a powerful forest fire monitoring and alert system, SNPP-VIIRS, which could capture forest fires with better accuracy and precision.

However, in April 2019, the new technology recorded 69,523 forest fires, which was 9.5 times more than that recorded by the earlier technology (MODIS), it said.

Question:

We live in a small SRA house, the kitchen is a small place where I sleep at night otherwise toilet and bathroom everything in one room, I stay with my brother and his wife. Brother goes to work at 5 am; I leave home at 10 am for college.  My brother’s wife removes her clothes in front of me. She even dresses in front of me. When I ignore, she calls me for some or the other thing. The night also she comes to the kitchen several times and sits beside me trying to pamper me. My tired brother gets to sleep soon. One day I tried making my point to her, but she still grabbed my hand and started doing all sorts of things. I wanted to leave my brother’s house; for a few days I did not return home, my brother was upset over neglecting my sister-in-law. I am in real pain; tell me how I can resolve this?

Radheshyam, Dharavi

Vivek Mantri’s answer:

Hi Radhesham,

Your situation is still under your control. We shouldn’t and also can’t control others. The present situation is creating lots of emotional trauma for you. You are not expressing your emotions. More you suppress, more you will invite problems for your health down the line.

It’s important to keep your dignity and health intact. You can definitely think of staying separate. Wish you best of Emotional Health.

Question:

When I was 13 and I was a pretty sheltered kid so I was kind of naive. My parents had a couple-friend who they sometimes went barhopping with on the weekends. Well, my mom and dad eventually stopped going out with them (I never really asked why) but later on came to know that my mom was asked to have a group sex, means both couple in one room in front of each other. To which my mother did not agree and they both ended up getting divorced. I remained with my mother. A few days back, I was shocked to know the same couple sexually exploited my father. Till the time he had the strength he coped up and now he feels ashamed. I want to drag this couple to cops but I have no proof and no support from parents. I am sure this couple must be doing such things with others too. Tell me what can I do?

Danish, Parel

Vivek Mantri’s answer:

Hi Danish,

Presently I would request you to take care of your dad’s Emotional Wellness.  Make him feel comfortable and assure him that you are always there with him. This will help him to be fit and fine. Now comes the question about that couple. As right now you don’t have any proof, don’t spend your energy there. Work on your betterment. Karmic records never fail.

Be happy. Take care of your dad.

Question:

We met online in 2014 when we were both 19. He lived in a city 150 km from the mine. We met on a forum we used to frequent and got to chat. We chatted on and off for years. He moved to Gujarat around 2015, at the same time I moved to his hometown for college (south India). He visited his hometown in 2016 during summer and we met up in person for the first time. We talked all the time, we went to the movies, hung out, and laughed. It was just the two of us for an entire month. He left, came back next summer (2018), more of the same. But…

I had a boyfriend and I cheated on my boyfriend with him. It lasted a few weeks until he went back. He admitted to falling for me and we agreed it was all a mistake since I was with someone and even if that weren’t the case, we were still miles apart. We ended on a bad note, had a bit of a fight since he felt a bit used. And he was right. I felt bad but we still made up and chatted a lot during our time apart. This summer (2018) he didn’t come. He had surgery on his brain; he had a tumour that was not cancer. I moved back to my old city, but I was single. I was going through a lot of shit in my life, so our conversations helped through all that. We chatted in 2017 24/7. We were two peas in a pod. I fell for him, hard, and it was very obvious. I was excited to see him.

He told me he was coming home…. with a “friend”. He told me that April 22nd, 7 days before I would depart to meet him. Turns out, he thought I was never serious since I already strung him along once. He thought I was just messing with him and would not actually take off work just to go and meet him for a few days. I was crushed. I was mad. But I couldn’t fault him. He was right – I was an asshole to him and my then boyfriend. And I probably deserved this. But I was still hurt. At this point, I started thinking of him as the one who got away.

We stopped talking for a while. 2019, April I got engaged. I dated my fiancé, here he came back to my life again and I just couldn’t stop myself, had sex with him. We loved each other madly…. where should I go from here?

Sudha, Bellari

Vivek Mantri’s answer:

Hi Sudha,

Boundaries have to be set and respected. Your entire conversation shows that you were just always looking for your own Emotional Comfort. Might be feeling of security with being someone around always. But this not the way. Now please focus on your married life. Water once crossed bridge should not be attempted to pull back or revisit.

Best of luck!

Question:

I’m bitter and angry towards disabled kids and I feel horrible about it.

I’ll make it short. I graduated with an average across all my classes of 99 per cent, including AP and dual enrollment classes. Needless to say, I worked my ass off and did great, including national high exam scores. My school features special needs classes that have a ton of extra credit work the other classes don’t have, meaning most of the kids in those classes can easily get averages above 100 per cent. I would have been my school’s valedictorian, but the disabled kids all had scores I couldn’t possibly achieve, with our actual valedictorian having an average of 115 per cent because of the extra credit work given. I feel robbed, I worked so hard and did so well and I can’t even be recognised for it because some special kids get special treatment. She gets to meet the governor and be honoured at all of these ceremonies, and even gets a massive scholarship for it. It’s not fair, if you take special needs courses you shouldn’t be eligible for valedictorian, or other GPA based rewards. I lost interest in education I started hating it all.

Jyostna, Juhu

Vivek Mantri’s answer:

Hi Jyotsna,

This is a common problem with many. In fact, I am happy that you at least accepted.  Here I would like to state a sentence. I complained I had no shoes until I saw a man with no legs!

Respect the humanitarian factor. Those guys have fought against all odds. You have better off life. Maybe your life purpose is different. Try to work on your life Purpose. Shift your focus. You will come out of this feeling.

Question:

I read your post on FB, from there I picked up your mail; I have one confession and question too, why girls are tricky? Well! Let me tell you, When my crush joined, I didn’t think much of it. But at one point, I got the idea to DM her on FB using the secondary account that can’t be traced to me. I decided to do it, and I said: “I’m in love with you and I’m not sure why.”

To my surprise, she responded! And she wasn’t creeped out or anything. She said something like “Not sure why you’d like me but thank you.” We started walking for a while, and at one point, she mentioned me by name, saying I was one of the few people she really likes. However, I feel sad that she is way happier to talk to the anonymous version of me, rather than normal me. I am getting disturbed by this. Hope you don’t post this answer on FB. But tell me where I can read.

Anonymous

 Vivek Mantri’s answer:

This is a very wrong approach. Also, it shows that your original version couldn’t click her heart. And you as Fake version of yours approached in a way which you should have done in the original version. Finally, she is not at fault if your other self is her real choice, which she might have realised. Now you try to be the way she expects from your other you

Life will be better. Best luck!

Question:

I have been lying to everyone for the past year because I am a very depressed person but I always act happy and I am always helping people who are depressed but I can’t get past my own depression and I really want to tell someone but I am not really the kind to ask for help with anything and the girl that I like has no idea about it. I’ve been a lesbian my whole life, and never romantically been attracted to a man. It makes me so uncomfortable or that I have a boyfriend. I’m so uncomfortable.

Laxmi, Dhindoshi

 Vivek Mantri’s answer:

Hi Laxmi

It happens that a person who is undergoing some depression can counsel others in that state. As they understand the pain better. Also, try to check your patterns what made this Emotion or feeling of being lesbian triggered, there must be some cause, some event.

Also being Lesbian or Bi is a matter of your choice as to where you are comfortable in. In case if you have a doubt in the decision making, seek a professional counsellor’s help.

Question:

I’m a really good-looking person and I want to find love, I really do but I fear I’ll never be in a relationship where the love is mutual. All the people I date fall in love with me instantly and I use that to manipulate them because I like to feel powerful and I laugh when they cry. Then I realise I actually love them and I do everything I can to make up for the damage but it’s always too late… I swear something just takes over me.

No name, Mumbai

Vivek Mantri’s answer:

Hi, your write-up shows you are just trying to gain significance in one or other way. Somewhere some childhood patterns might be disturbed. Please workout on those disturbing patterns. Don’t overpower others just to gain a feeling of significance.

Growth rates in low-income countries below mark to reduce poverty, reports World Bank

The World BankGrowth rates in low-income countries are expected to rise to 6 per cent in 2020 from 5.4 per cent this year, but that is still not enough to substantially reduce poverty, according to the World Bank (WB).

A number of low-income countries progressed to middle-income status between 2000 and 2018, the remaining low-income countries face steeper challenges to achieving similar progress, the WB said in a report released on Tuesday.

Many are poorer than the countries that made the leap to higher income levels and are fragile, disadvantaged by geography and heavily reliant on agriculture, said the report titled ‘June 2019 Global Economic Prospects: Heightened Tensions, Subdued Investment.’

“Stronger economic growth is essential to reducing poverty and improving living standards,” said World Bank Group President David Malpass.

“Current economic momentum remains weak, while heightened debt levels and subdued investment growth in developing economies are holding countries back from achieving their potential,” he said, adding it is urgent that countries make significant structural reforms that improve the business climate and attract investment.

“They also need to make debt management and transparency a high priority so that new debt adds to growth and investment,” said Malpass.

While almost every economy faces headwinds, the poorest countries face the most daunting challenges because of fragility, geographic isolation, and entrenched poverty, said World Bank Group Vice President for Equitable Growth, Finance, and Institutions, Ceyla Pazarbasioglu.

“Unless they can get onto a faster growth trajectory, the goal of lowering extreme poverty under 3 per cent by 2030 will remain unreachable,” he said.

On the other hand, said the World Bank report, growth in emerging market and developing economies is expected to stabilise next year as some countries move past periods of financial strain, However, the economic momentum remains weak.

“Emerging and developing economy growth is constrained by sluggish investment, and risks are tilted to the downside. These risks include rising trade barriers, renewed financial stress, and sharper-than-expected slowdowns in several major economies,” it said.

Growth among emerging market and developing economies is projected to fall to a four-year low of 4 per cent in 2019 before recovering to 4.6 per cent in 2020. A number of economies are coping with the impact of financial stress and political uncertainty.

Those drags are anticipated to wane and global trade growth — which is projected to be the weakest in 2019 since the financial crisis a decade ago — is expected to recover somewhat, said the report.
