10 Years Of Success – The Fight Is On!

I was threatened and warned by the publishers that the media industry is small and I won’t get a job anywhere if I do not weather with the same publication. However, I decided to give up my job that day and started my own publication.

Afternoon Voice is 10 years old today. Let’s rewind the journey; it was 2008 when I walked out of a job as a City Editor due to hierarchy and I was threatened and warned by the publishers that media industry is small and I won’t get a job anywhere if I do not weather with the same publication. However, I decided to give up my job that day and started my own publication. Since I left “The Afternoon Dispatch and Courier”, I decided to name my publication as ‘Afternoon Voice” the voice of those journalists who are never heard, who have no freedom of expression or who are exploited by the publication house just to render services like a robot. An intellectual mortgage is a curse. I created my banner with people’s voice. I launched Afternoon Voice with some school dropouts and some naïve journalist’s friends, asking my family to mortgage only house of ours and they really supported the thought by risking the only shelter that we had. With many twists and turns, we completed ten long years, without any interruption. In these ten years, the other Afternoon Dispatch and Courier doesn’t exist. I mean they closed the show and we are still walking the path, now I can proudly say that there is only one afternoon and that is “Afternoon Voice”. The paper, with most reliable reportage seeking truth and adherence to new age journalism, the important, interesting and hopeful trend to me in the new journalism is its personal nature — not in the sense of personal attacks, but in the presence of the reporter himself and the significance of his own involvement which is the opposite of the usual journalistic pretence. This is a medium of expression which gives voice to the untold and a platform to the unheard. Be it social activists, poets, actors, journalists, travel writers, authors or the big ones from music to science, everybody is into a news-making these days. In mainstream media houses, there are certain regulations laid down which a journalist has to adhere to. But, here, I make sure that there are no such restraints. We made our newspaper, our readers communicate with us on a daily basis, and now most of our readers are content contributors and writers to Afternoon Voice. Interaction helps enrich both the editorial desk and the reader ultimately enhancing the content. It is a two-way process in which everybody learns, and grows.

The drastic evolution of information technology and social media has led to a parallel shift in what it means to be a journalist in an increasingly globalized news sector. As a profession, journalism has become ever vaguer as it struggles to keep pace with the growing sector of information communication technologies. Our modern-day journalism is therefore forced to adapt by creating new journalistic roles, skills, and practices. One could even say that a whole new identity must be found, reconciling the traditional principles of transparency and objectivity with modern society’s expanding multimedia interests. My team has done a great job in accepting and adapting to the changing technical nature. They are aptly educated towards a discipline that now incorporates an extensive amount of multimedia complexities. However, this adaptation process has not applied to all the communication industries. We do not follow any political party, group or ideology and our pure agenda is to report objectively. We speak our minds, being neutral is always on the hit list of some or the other, if you attack BJP – the supporters of BJP translate your reporting as Congress supporting, same goes with Congress and other political parties as well. We are here to question, praise, pull and plug everyone and anyone, we as media household a lot of social responsibilities. The Nation is above all; politicians and political parties are not permanent. We might look odd but we are unique in our own way. We don’t promote ourselves; we just publish and leave it to readers. Various institutions and corporations have increased their spending towards online advertisement while “reducing their spending on printed publications”. The emerging trend of using the Internet as an advertising medium sustains a form of journalism that will remain both independent and focused upon maintaining transparency. We are printing our paper from the past 10 years and have made sure that we are equally present on social media as well.

Being a journalist is both exciting and stressful. We are constantly on a deadline because of the online and on-going competition, but you never know what you might end up covering each day. It may not be very rewarding financially, but it is rewarding to write stories that make a difference in people’s lives. I love my job in spite of all odds. These days Journalists are by definition critics. It’s an essential trait for people who seek out information, or edit it, to be skeptical – especially of institutions. That includes own institution too. But we would not trade our lives and ethics for any reason or offers. We are trying to make a difference being a parallel media. We are fighting against the odds in the fraternity. I actually don’t know how long I will be able to keep the show alive, but I am sure about my integrity towards my pen as long as I am here. Yes, I criticize everyone without being biased and I appreciate all that is in favour of the democracy and its people.

I stand neutral and neither do I carry any vendetta nor do I seek any favours. My strength is my reader’s goodwill. Being a journalist and an editor day in and day out I teach my team how to be responsible for their work because they are presenting themselves as news reporters to the people of India. When I say India – every fellow Indian is equal to me. Be it of any political party, community, group, and creed. I have no favouritism. The very democracy has given every right to the citizen of this country; let them make choices for themselves without getting influenced by any paid or favoured news coverage. I have no right to participate in hate mongering against any individual or political party, at the same time I have no locus to present the defaulter as “HERO” just because my inclination is towards them. I as a media should stand neutral and play a role of the opposition, especially when actual political opposition is weak. All though I frequently take burns for being neutral, I am tagged and trolled. I am not scared of being labelled while walking my path and my teams too share this collective responsibility. We are young team, hand to mouth but we hold great dreams by committed to bring the change.

I have tried my level best to keep parallel media alive by fighting all probabilities of this trade. We are committed to uphold fair journalism and live with its truthfulness. We are a small newspaper and could not fetch much readership through print, but we have created our strong existence. People have started noticing us. Sometimes, I get scared of getting vanished due to rat race in media. Therefore, to strengthen our roots and remain here forever as the voice of the people, we have proudly taken a step ahead by Digitalization of our publication. On internet – we have a huge scope to expand our vision, we can reach out globally, and moreover, we are not here to make money or fame. We are here to serve news and content. We are marking our presence to make a difference in fourth estate and progress towards higher levels of existence and expression. We are here to bring the revolution in media.

Off late, media is called as ‘prostitute’ (presstitute), paid (bazaru) and what not. Somewhere, people have lost faith in mainstream journalism. Broadcasting has become tools in the hands of power or rulers. Over the past few years, mainstream media has been hit by an integrity crisis. The line between journalism and public relations (PR) is blurring. Corruption in mainstream media occurs in two ways; one, individual journalists are paid in cash or kind; second, media owners are compromised by political parties or business houses. In such a crisis, if we; the young media have to stand strong, then existence in digital space is very crucial. Currently, we are everywhere from print media to social media. So far we have not halted.

Since our entry into the market, we have always been experimenting with things to set new trends in media and keep parallel journalism alive. Holding a Publication house or Newspaper is no more a prerogative of an Industrialist. What matters is that you need to have courage, capabilities and a strong pen in hand. There is no alternative to hard work and sincere efforts. For me, it has been quite an eventful journey and a fantastic learning process. On this occasion, I would first like to express my sincere gratitude to all my readers and the people who actually shaped me as a journalist and helped me grow. Also to all my subordinates who let me explore and lend freedom to reach new avenues, my team includes a small group of inexperienced staffs with some already mentored while some yet to explore. Having limited resources, the feeble status of not affording to pay very good package to the staffs, yet I remain prompt when payments are concerned.

Many get surprised and wonder how we are surviving and are able to manage so many publications, standards, and uninterrupted show. The secret is proper strategy and dedication to complete tasks in limited resources. I am proud to know the fact that, ours is the only parallel media house existing so far. Journalists abide accountability before the society in general, before the law and the professional connotation. We are also fortunate that we have good readers who trust us and believe in our integrity. This has been a long journey with various experiences and learning.
I thank each and everyone who has contributed to our voyage.

Newsmakers Achievers' Awards, 10th Newsmakers Achievers' Awards, NBC Awards, Asha Bhosle, Ajay Pohankar, Ankita Lokhande, Geeta Kapoor, Zingubai Bolke, Moushumi Chatterjee, Bappi LahiriThe 10th edition of Newsmakers Achievers Awards was held on May 1, 2019, at the Rangswar Auditorium, Yashwantrao Chavan Centre, Nariman Point. Sweeping success of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan

swachh bharatAs the residents of a metro city we find that the cleanliness has been given prime importance and the environment is free from of garbage as we pass through a clean and green city. The praise comes from the mouth of a senior freelancer not just to lobby for a political party as the elections are nearing and this piece is not filed not just as a publicity stunt but to press some valid points for the cleanliness of the city.

The phrase ‘Cleanliness is next to Godliness’ has finally become more than just an idea. On October 2, 2014, on the eve of Mahatma Gandhi’s 145th birth anniversary, PM Narendra Modi launched an important campaign ‘Swachh Bharat’, that is Clean India.

The aim of this campaign is to make India one of the cleanest cities of the world in the next five years. This cleanliness campaign has become so popular that from a common man to Bollywood celebrities, everyone was participating wholeheartedly. It is time to prevent the accumulation of garbage and the efforts taken on a weekly basis to work in certain pockets should not go waster and it is a welcome signal to maintain the status quo and do a world of good to the society in general and the country in particular.

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is gaining momentum and people of every walks of life join the great movement under the leadership of our Prime Minister.  On the whole, it is a successful movement and the people take it in the right spirits to make it a most successful one. However, when we witness the operation is going on in a society or in the streets, we observe that the people are targeting one particular space for cleaning with an aim to catch the lens of the camera and getting their photos published in news dailies. This is not in good taste and defeats the very purpose of cleaning a park or a locality and its surrounding instead of just concentrating at one spot for the show business.

It is to remove the unwanted vehicles parked in the main parking lot.  They not only make others suffer and the dust accumulated in the vehicles will cause diseases like Bronchitis and Asthma. Societies should make arrangements to remove unwanted vehicles.  After all, cleanliness is next to Godliness. In and around the area of the society is to be kept clean.  By allowing dogs inside the society the cleanliness part is not maintained properly.  To add salt to the wound people throw rubbish from the balconies and making it worst for the passerby. We can see a used piece of condom or sanitary napkin on the walking track and that gives a shabby look to an otherwise well-maintained society. It is time to react and make things move to keep a clean green city.

It is important to realise that we need a policy that gives the mandate to the people to bring in the much-needed change. For example, take the ambitious cleaning of revered rivers. While there are endless discussions, where is the action? The movement has enough popularity but the momentum can be kept in place by using apt technology to take it to people. This lacuna of not interacting with people needs to be addressed. It would be ignorant of us not to acknowledge the efforts of some of the policies that demand change.

Until now people have been acting like consumers to this idea of Swachh Bharat and have bought it only on face value. Swachh Bharat will not happen in a vacuum, it will happen because of the collective efforts of all stakeholders and we need to act as citizens, who have the responsibility to realise this dream of a cleaner India. Citizens have to take the onus onto themselves, our mentality and behaviour of being alright with filth and dirt need to change. While we all are in favor of this change mentally, we need to work on actually implementing it ourselves. Basic acts of citizens such as not littering and segregating trash will go a long way. In this connection segregation of waste should come from the household and strict measures have to followed and guidelines issued periodically to create an awareness to the people. Waste segregation basically means keeping wet and dry wastes separately; so that dry can be recycled and wet waste can be composted. The idea of dry waste for recycling sounds good if followed strictly in the real meaning of the word.

Local corporators play a pivotal role in making PM’s dream a reality.  They work in unison with the municipal corporation workers and guide them properly in this regard.  Sweeping of public places can be taken up during night time so that the atmosphere will be free from dust when people go for a morning walk. In India the Central

Governments may change but the focus must not be lost. A lot to be done perhaps even undone, but let us look for a change and look enough natural resources that will keep the country healthy. That is easier said than done- but here is the Swachh Bharat challenge for all of us.

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan or Swachh Bharat Mission is a nation-wide campaign in India for the period 2014 to 2019 that aims to clean up the streets, roads, and infrastructure of India’s cities, towns, and rural areas. The campaign’s official name is in Hindi and translates to “Clean India Mission” in English.   What has aggravated over hundreds of years due to illiteracy and improper habitual activities may not be given up in a short span of a few months or years. However, the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan has achieved great success in spreading awareness across the country to get rid of many wrong and unhealthy practices. As a result, good progress has been observed through the Swachh Bharat mission. The real success of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan came full circle and we enjoy the real fruits of the mission and some cities like satellite city stood first in cleanliness and that is a significant one and not just for vote bank politics. It is indeed a dream come true life with the sweeping success of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.

Think and do vote for a change

think and vote for changeLife is a process. Whenever a woman or a mother conceives a child or is pregnant, then small cells join each other and turn into a piece of mass. In the time duration of about 40 to 50 days, the process of life (entry of the soul) begins in this small piece of mass and then it starts changing into a child gradually.

For 80-90 days, the soul sees and observes that if that piece of mass and the womb suits the soul. If the piece of mass and the womb suits the soul completely then it enters into it and if they don’t suit the soul then the child is born dead.

In this process of transforming two cells into a child, the mother has to undergo nine months of hard work, millions of pain and difficulties, and she embraces all these hardships smiling just for the sake of her child’s love and life. However, the process of being born of the child and mother’s childbearing is the most struggling in all these months.

If the child’s courage while being born or the mother’s giving birth to the child doesn’t break then both the mother and child will have a new life as well as a new world. But if any of them during this process loses hope or leave each other’s hand then both of them will have to face nothing but death.

Nine months of mother’s sheer compassion, pain, and love of raising the baby in her womb and the development of cells to an entire child will all become useless. All the dreams of the mother, all her problems, sufferings and the nine months’ time that was going to be a better, beautiful and like a festival of her life will turn into the worst, painful and fearful moment of her life and ultimately the mother turns into a living dead body as she can’t bear her child to born dead.

I hope that we can’t see anyone’s mother in this condition, then how can we see our own mother in these dire circumstances.

Right now our country has the same condition; we are now going through a process of birth. The pain will be great but we will have to be patient, will have to trust each other and must constantly keep fighting. If anyone loses the courage, hope or leach each other’s hand in the middle of this process, we would not get anything other than death, and I am sure that we all know and understand what death.

You can understand the essence of this story by replacing “country with mother” and “about to born child as yourself” and the “pain with this ruling government” in your mind.

Think and do vote for a change.

FEATURE LETTER DIARY 679x400 e1553672678487Such officers are needed!

Responsibility is taken by District Collector of Beed (in Maharashtra) as a sincere high-level officer is commendable. He has issued a circular for all government and private hospitals; laying down certain rules to be followed in cases related to the removal of uterus; instructing them to follow them meticulously; else face punishment. It shows his sense of social obligation which is quite rare these days. The valuable instructions given by him are as follows. Points to be noted before taking out uterus: Every lump on the uterus is not malignant and it does not require removal of the uterus. Swelling of the uterus doesn’t lead to cancer. Medicines are available for the same. Even for white or red discharge, removal of the uterus is not imperative since medicine can cure this problem. Ill effects of removing uterus: bones become brittle; fatigue increases; weight increases; accelerates aging; depression; losing interest in physical relations. Electronic and print media need to take note of the efforts made by a district of this State related to women’s issues so that it would be helpful for all women.

Protect children, protect future

Every year on May 1 people from all over the world celebrate Labour Day (or May Day, as it is called in India). The idea is to gain as much from this day as one can for oneself. However, what no one does is think about what this day truly stands for.

There are countless problems which are being faced by our labourers in our society such as poverty, illiteracy, food, and water crises. A vast majority of our labourers and daily-wage workers remain outside the field of labour laws, which means that workers have no paid holidays, no job security, no medical coverage, no pension or provident fund, no limit on working hours and are paid no overtime. In India with all this, there is also an issue of child labour. Child labour in India is growing at a disturbing rate. Hundreds and thousands of children struggle to achieve their basic necessities of life. Children are the future of any country and we should all work to help them become better people. Child labour is a very complex problem with its root in the socio-economic environment of the country. The children suffer from a lack of education and health facilities and better employment.

Is EC office working at PM’s behest?

Not sure if the EC (Election Commissioner) is working at his behest but Prime Minister Modi has not come under the EC scanner in spite of numerous poll code violations which is a pity. The office of EC should be neutral and every candidate irrespective of his stature should be treated equally. Air India boarding passes, teacups, and other accessories with Modi’s picture on the eve of polls are a clear violation of the model code of conduct that indicates favouritism. NaMo TV airing PM’s views were unheard before and setting a wrong precedent.

It is common knowledge that the Election Commissioners office, RBI, CBI, and other important institutions independence often get influenced by the government in power due to various reasons which everybody is aware of. The Supreme Court should act as the watchdog by intervening whenever it finds favouritism or sees undue advantage given to individuals or Party as the neutrality of elections should be maintained for the success of any democracy and we are the largest in the world!

PM admits horse-trading possible in present system

Prime Minister Narendra Modi in an election rally in West Bengal on April 29, 2019, admitted the weakness of our democratic system when he disclosed that 40 TMC MLAs were in his touch to join BJP in case BJP emerges as the winner in poll-results for Lok Sabha to be announced on May 23, 2019. It means there is no morality left in elected representatives who prefer going with the wind rather than sticking to ideological stands. It was also established from behaviour of such politicians when they immediately switched over to other parties after being denied party-ticket by their parent party. Shifting loyalties is very often in case of government-formation in states with hung-assemblies. All this amounts to fraud with voters.

Horse-trading can only be checked by a system wherein Chief Minister may be simultaneously elected with Speaker and Deputy Speaker through secret and compulsory votes of all MLAs through EVMs equipped with VVPAT on nominations signed by at least 34 per cent MLAs. Such persons may be removed only through no-confidence motion passed in the same manner but with a compulsion to name alternate incumbent in the same motion. MLAs not participating in such elections may lose voting-right in state-assembly though retaining membership. Such a system will also pave way for much talked-about simultaneous elections for Lok Sabha, state-assemblies and even civic bodies because the aspect of hung-assemblies will then be ruled out.

10th Newsmakers Achievers’ Award tonight

10th Newsmakers Achievers’ AwardNewsmakers will host the 10th edition of the ‘Newsmakers Achievers’ Award 2019′ on May 1, 2019, at the Rangswar Auditorium, Yashwantrao Chavan centre, Nariman Point. The award event is being held to recognise the efforts of common men who have made some difference to society through their hard work and determination. We have dedicated this year’s award event to help the “Kashmiri orphan girls’ education”.

Blessed are those children who have their parents — they grow up amid their undivided care and affection. However, there are thousands of unfortunate children who are deprived of the love and the reason behind their tragic fate can be many — natural disasters, conflicts, and above all, violence. Reports reveal that the continued violence in the Kashmir valley has raised thousands of orphans. Most of these children have nobody to look after and are mostly left to themselves. Moreover, an increased number of girl orphans pose many challenges to society and we think it’s our moral duty and social responsibility to lend our hands for the welfare of girl orphans.

Vaidehi Taman, the Group Editor of NBC and Editor-in-Chief of Afternoon Voice said, “Journalism is blotted today. People call it Bazaru, sold media, and yellow journalism as they don’t see honesty in the reporting. Whereas, we are parallel media, self-funded, and we are trying to live with our integrity and with no friend no foes. We criticise everyone those who does mistakes and we praise everyone irrespective of their political identity.”

“Our newspaper is not widely circulated and we are a small organisation. While people ask for honest journalism, they don’t adhere to that. The narrative of honest journalism is so confusing that keeping ourselves alive is a big challenge,” she added.

The Lifetime achievement award stands to highlight those individuals who have dedicated their lives to make outstanding and creative contributions in the respective fields. The ‘Newsmakers Achievers’ Award 2019 will honour legendary singer Asha Bhosle, veteran classical vocalist Pandit Ajay Pohankar, renowned yesteryear actress Moushumi Chatterjee, and notable journalist Rajiv Bajaj with the Lifetime Achievement Award.

While Jetendra Patel will be honoured with the Best Astrologer Award, Dr. Vishal Sawant will be receiving the Best Doctor Award, Maharashtra Cultural and Education Minister Vinod Tawde will be felicitated with the Best Working Politician Award. Jivhala Maharashtrian will be admired with the Best Maharashtrian Restaurant Award.

Social Reformer Zingubai Bolke, Trans-Model Navya Singh, and Dancing Star Daksh Bhaskar will be honoured with the Jury Awards.

The Media Awards segment will felicitate Sahil Joshi with the Best News Anchor Award, Ajay Shukla with the Best Journalist Award, and Prashant Shishodia with the Best Editor (Entertainment) Award. Hockey player Yuvraj Walmiki will be honoured with the Best Sports Personality Award. The awardees in the Entertainment category includes Kamaal R Khan who will be honoured with the Best Film Critic Award, Rajesh Shringarpore who will be receiving the Best Marathi Actor, and Chhaya Kadam who will be receiving the Best Marathi Actress Award. The Entertainment Awards will also felicitate Salil Acharya with the Best RJ and Anchor Award, Raj Kaushal with the Best Director Award, and Manoj Santoshi with the Best TV Writer Award (Bhabhi Ji Ghar Par Hain). Geeta Kapoor will be honoured with the Best Choreographer (Female) Award. Ankita Lokhande and Dhaval Nakhua will be honoured with the Best Actress and Best Gujarati Debutant Awards respectively. Bhau Kadam will be receiving the Best Comedian Award (Chala Hawa Yeu Dya) and Kiku Sharda will be applauded with the Best Comedian Award (Kapil Sharma Show). Kartikey Malviya and Aakriti Sharma will be complemented with the Best Child Artist (Male) Award and Best Child Artist (Female) Award respectively.

Starting from a modest beginning, our organisation has overcome several hurdles to complete successful 10 years. Within a short span of time, Newsmakers has become a force to reckon and has earned a name for itself in the media industry. We believe in empowering people and providing them an opportunity to report about the news and other issues affecting the common man. We are offering a medium from where they can speak and debate about the issues pertaining to the national interest.

Our newspaper Afternoon Voice is a Mumbai daily covering all aspects of the city. Besides the daily diet of news, sports and business, readers are served stimulating columns and features related to the theme of the day.

Long Live Parallel Journalism — A Difficult Journey

Couldn’t realise how these 10 years have passed. The story started with a rebel. There was a publication house which used to assign its reporters for its non-profession works — whenever someone’s grandchildren needed admission, whenever they wanted to seek Darshan of “Lalbaugcha Raja”, and so many other things.

The entire credit of any success always used to be showered on the company and its owner; however, the same was not in the case of a disaster or whenever the business faced hardships, the employees of the organisation were put accountable whatsoever.

When a newspaper is supported by the politicians or a business group, the news is in the hold of Mafia hands. Let it be business mafia, political mafia, land mafia, or anything. The inclination of the newspaper doesn’t work in favour of the general public but it goes towards the interest of the newspaper owner. That is the reason we stood up and we said that we will be a self-funded organisation. A bunch of rebels started this newspaper when they could not succumb to the atrocities. When they refused to mortgage their intellect, they refused to be the bonded labour of a media house. That’s how we started this journey of Afternoon Voice. Today, the same publication with the same name Afternoon has quit the market and now we are thriving.

In these 10 years of competition, finally, Afternoon Despatch & Courier succumbed. This has been dispatched or couriered to such an address that is not traceable and we’re still here today and will be here in the times to come with your blessings. We don’t follow any ideology, neither we hate any nor love any; we don’t have complaints from anyone, we’re not the slaves or supporters of any political party, we don’t envy any. Our only agenda is Parallel Journalism. We love to speak the truth. We love the establishment as much as we have complaints to them. We have as many questions for them as many we try to find the answers for.

We want to speak because the common people whom we represent can’t speak for themselves but we can. We have to speak for them because their voices can’t be heard in the corridors of power. Now, if we love or envy someone in this struggle, we wouldn’t be able to make our voices Loud, Clear and Objective.

Being parallel or neutral is a curse these days because nobody likes you. If you criticise Congress you are labelled as a BJP supporter. If you ask questions to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, they think you are anti-BJP. If you ask questions to AAP, they think you’re the pawns of national parties. If you praise Arvind Kejriwal, it is translated as you are an AAPTARD. In these times, when media is called Presstitute, we are successfully upholding the spirit of Unbiased Journalism or Parallel Journalism without compromising our ethics and without falling into those categories.

We don’t have as many staff as the number of pages in our newspaper. However, we publish and successfully distribute this newspaper to our readers and common people daily. Afternoon Voice — a small newspaper, a small team, thousands of readers, and manifold the readership, hundreds of calls every day — someone has praises, someone has complaints. There are so many decisions we have to take in moment because a Newspaper runs on deadlines. Sometimes our decisions might go wrong, sometimes we may make mistake but trust me, no mistake of ours is ever that big which can’t be forgiven.

Everyone wants honest journalism but most of them don’t know how the narrative of honest journalism has been misplaced. You want to listen to the truth but if your leader or party is questioned, you don’t like this. You want to listen to the truth that is convenient to you and if journalism is going to happen on those parameters, then I would certainly say that the journalism has been sold out which we are not going to accept ever. We can’t be the voice of everyone because we’re the voice of the common people. We can’t walk with someone because we have to walk parallel to you to show you the right path. Now some may ask us “Who are we?” My answer would be “Someone who lives the journalism truly”.

We are a small part of one community. If you accept us, you read; if you don’t, there are many other newspapers. You don’t read each and every one of them. You are free to make your choices. We’re small and we can’t reach everywhere but wherever we reach, our Voice is Loud and Clear. We know it very well that we’re contributing immensely in the making of modern India. We know we follow our Prime Minister, be it Digital India or Beti Bachao Beti Padhao. Daughters are harassed even today and dowry is still there but its form has changed. These days’ people don’t ask for dowry, they ask for gifts as per their so-called reputation.

If a girl is born in your family, she is not treated equally but as inferior to others. At the cost of the girl, the boy’s side feels they are superior. Rape cases are increasing. Until we teach our sons that ‘male too feels pain’ nothing is going to change in society. How long Modi alone is going to tell people “Beti Bachao”? Modi has given you a slogan and showed you a path. It’s the supreme responsibility of each one of us that we save our Betis and we’re proud that we’re doing that. We criticise the government for its wrong decisions, schemes, and policies and at the same time, we embrace whatever right it has said or tried to do. We follow their right decisions as a “Gospel truth”.

Today, we have many daughters from Kashmir amongst us whose fathers were killed in riots and by terrorists. These girls are orphans. A few of their parents were in police, some were informers of police. They died for us and for our country.

We’re a small organisation, but every year on this occasion, we try to do something for these kids. We adopted 25 acid attack victims in 2017. We got some of them treated, gave jobs to some, and contributed to the marriage of many. We did whatever we could have done in the best of our capacity. We provide drinking water to the kids living in slums in the summer. My team may be working in the official timings, but we make some time to go to these slums to teach these kids for free.

Our resolve is tomorrow’s India. We would love to stand with and support those leaders who want to do something better for this country by being the voice of the people rather than being a mouthpiece of any political party.

We’re harassed because we don’t go hand in hand with anyone and that harassment gives us the courage to keep moving ahead. That’s the reason precisely that I’m standing in front of you after this journey of 10 years. We struggled a lot in all these years. We were very tiny when we started the journey. I remember when Shivanand Sir, former Commissioner of Mumbai police came to inaugurate our newspaper. He said to me with a slight smile that “Vaidehi, I should get you and your team arrested under the Child Labour Act.” This was because we all were very young, small in sizes, and in fact, half of the team members were school dropouts. If I try to recall, Praneet, Rohini, and Aditi are the names that come to my mind. These three were my first team. All of them were school dropouts who left their education in 12th. Since they had one year’s time to reappear for the board exams and they didn’t have anything to do, so I asked them if they would like to be the reporters.

Many of their friends laughed at me and made fun of me but trust me, these three were the people who had that potential. You ask social or any other issues, they would go and come back with reports and news, represent correctly, and write the same properly. They were all educated kids from the convent schools so it was not a challenge for them to write in English.

The way they were writing news was totally different than the other and that freshness of the newspaper was the element that gave us an identity in this big market. We broke the years-long-tradition of the senior citizens sitting on the desk and writing monotonously on the same issues with the same lines and same perception.

Even today, the senior most team member and Sub-Editor is 23-year-old. The team member who manages all the administration is also 25-year-old. My team is very small. Small in age but big in thoughts and perhaps this is what makes us different from all others. We don’t have a very large readership base as we can’t print in large numbers. However, we do have our online edition. I would request everyone that if you like us, do visit our online edition and keep reading Afternoon Voice. If you think any improvement is needed, then your suggestions are always welcome.

When I said that we’re the voice of the common people then we all together can change the condition and the direction of this country or at least of this society or if at least of one person. Without taking too much of your time, I would like to speak a little about this award event.

We organise Newsmakers Achievers’ Awards every year because there are many people like us, who with lots of labour and struggle have reached where they are today. Some of them have really made it big and some of them are reaching there. So, we had decided whether we get the appreciation or not, whether we get the recognition or not, whether we’re thanked or not, we must do that. Whosoever has made it big today with their unmatched talent, it is our duty to thank every one of them as somehow they have contributed to our lives in a big way, directly or indirectly. Whatever best we can do for them in our capacity, we will surely do it. I welcome all of you in today’s award event and from here we start the journey of the lifetime achievements.

Northeast India: Where Editors censure journalism

northeast journalismReporting turmoil and conflicts was the order of the day for most of Assam-based (also northeast India) scribes as the region was overshadowed by separatist militants with their disruptive activities till a few years back. The media persons then faced two-edged swords where reporting would bring brickbats from the government agencies and aloofness could invite wraths from the armed rebels.

Time changes and so thus militants’ influence (read power) over the common people! Slowly those militant outfits, who had dreamt of independence out of New Delhi’s colonial rule over the alienated region, came to realise that materialisation of their golden vision would not be possible in the near future. Many turned to peace talks with the government and very few continue struggling for the mirage.

However, even if most of the militant leaders could realise their limitations, some elements in the society were not ready to depart from the notion of armed revolution with the fantasy of a homeland with self-rule. Though never engaged with the revolution personally, those emotionally charged entities continued their flowery words in favour of the militant leaders as and when necessary in public domains.

Shockingly a section of media persons also enriched those entities and they left no stone unturned to exploit the volatile situation in favour militants, who used to kill hundreds of common people including women and children during the turbulent days. For them whenever an insurgent was killed in an encounter, it was assumed as an attack by the Centre (popularly termed as Rashtra-Jantra) on the indigenous population.

However, if a member of armed forces, engaged in counter-insurgency operations in the troubled region, got neutralised, it was projected as a sign of victory to the revolution. In numerous occasions, both newspapers and news channels of the region had reported with the spirit of locals that slowly turned sympathetic to the separatists.

Even regional newspaper editorials and television talk shows were augmented with the same temperament. Situation reappeared when most of the northeastern localities witnessed an uproarious ambiance a few weeks back with the emergence of Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) that offers Indian citizenship to all religious asylum seekers from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party brought the bill and even got it passed in Lok Sabha, the lower house of the Indian Parliament. However, the CAB was lapsed in the upper house (Rajya Sabha) as the saffron party had no majority there.

As the Brahmaputra valley of Assam was rocked by numerous anti-CAB protest demonstrations, a section of media personalities along with intellectuals in Guwahati started capitalizing the atmosphere in favour of banned separatist militants (read United Liberation Front of Assam-Independent). Joining of few Assamese youths in Paresh Barua-led Ulfa(I) at that time was reported as an instant implication of anti-CAB sentiments.

For records, over 25 Guwahati based editors signed a memorandum opposing the CAB and submitted to Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal to pursue with the BJP leadership to withdraw the bill, which was criticized as anti-Assamese (Jaati-Dhangshi) in nature. BJP’s moderate face Sonowal only commented that he would not do anything wrong to the people of Assam and finally urged everyone to repose faith on his authority.

The issue of CAB remained visible on poll-campaigns for general elections as the opposition Congress party tried its best to take advantage of the situation. It would be visible only on May 23 poll-outcome day if the voters of northeast considered the CAB as an important factor while electing 25 representatives to 17th Lok Sabha from the far-eastern region.

However, the CAB issue reached to the media fraternity of Assam in a different incarnation as a Maharashtra based voluntary organisation lodged an official complaint against five media outlets alleging that those exploited the turmoil over CAB and helped banned militant outfits in their fresh recruitment drives. Following the accusation of Legal Rights Observatory (LRO), the Union Home Ministry had asked the State government in Dispur to take necessary actions.

Vinay Joshi, convener of LRO in his public grievance petition sent on 14 February 2019 accused four editors namely Ajit Kumar Bhuyan (Chief Editor of Prag News Channel), Nitumoni Saikia (Editor of Pratidin Time news channel), Manjit Mahanta (former Executive Editor of Asomiya Pratidin newspaper) and Afrida Hussain (Editor of InsideNE news portal) of propagating militant’s ideology to give them a fresh boost in the sideline of anti-CAB rows.

The LRO letter also urged the ministry to ‘investigate the role of suspicious Assam media outlets and their owners, their financial transactions, source of income, the possible flow of funds from foreign intelligence agencies and banned terrorist groups to media owners and all other possible aspects related to it’. The letter also added that on various occasions, these media outlets had openly professed the need to take up arms against New Delhi and broadcast propaganda videos of militant cadres.

Responding to the LRO letter, Union home ministry official Sanjeev Kumar sent an official communiqué to  Assam police chief Kuladhar Saikia and State home secretary Ashutosh Agnihotri on 16 April directing to take necessary actions in the matter. However, the communiqué had neither mentioned of any inquiry against the concerned editors nor asked for any follow-up report from the State government.

Twisted with facts, few media outlets reported that the Centre was going for investigations against the editors who opposed the CAB and actions against them. They simply projected the issue as an anti-media conspiracy of the Union government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and tried to gather moral support from the media fraternity across the country.

However, the LRO convener lately made it clear that they opposed the editors for spreading anti-national propagandas during the turmoil and certainly not for their stand in favour or against of the CAB. Asserting that they respect anyone’s stand on political issues, the convener reiterated that they would continue pursuing with the responsible authorities against the violent propaganda so that Assam can be saved from burning again.

Earlier a Guwahati-based concerned citizen (Biswajit Nath) sent a memorandum to PMO describing suspicious behaviour of some print and electronic media outlets of the State. His letter on November 26, 2018, asserted that a section of scribes always glorified the insurgents and often highlighted Ulfa (I) leader Barua with live interviews. As usual, the Centre on February 22 asked the State government to take appropriate actions in the matter.

Ness Wadia sentenced to two years jail in Japan Over Drugs Possession

ness wadia jailBusiness tycoon Ness Wadia has been sentenced to two years in prison in Japan for possession of drugs in the country, a Japanese radio broadcasting station has reported.

He was reportedly detained in custody before being sentenced to two years by the Sapporo District Court. The sentence has been suspended for five years and he has returned to India.

According to reports  sniffer dogs had alerted customs officials at Hokkaido’s New Chitose Airport to Wadia. On searching him, Japanese officials found 25 grams of cannabis resin in his pockets. This occurred in early March, and Wadia was promptly arrested under Japan’s stringent narcotics laws. Wadia, one of India’s richest men, is believed to have been on a skiing trip in Japan when he was caught. The New Chitose Airport, where he was caught, functions as a popular transit point for skiers looking to travel to locations like Niseko, Sapporo, Furano and Rusutsu.

Wadia is the son of Nusli Wadia, a British Parsi businessman, entrepreneur and chairman of the Wadia Group. He was the joint managing director of Bombay Dyeing, the flagship company of the Wadia Group, till March 2011 when he stepped down from the post and is now a co-owner of the Indian Premier League cricket team Kings XI Punjab.
