Lok Sabha member Kirti Azad, who was suspended from BJP, joined Congress on Monday in the presence of Congress President Rahul Gandhi.

“Today in front of Shri Rahul Gandhi I joined the Congress. I felicitated him in traditional Mithila style,” Azad tweeted.

A cricketer-turned politician, Azad was elected to Lok Sabha thrice from Darbanga in Bihar. He had fought the 2014 general elections on a BJP ticket.

Azad was scheduled to join Congress on February 15 but his induction into the party was postponed in the wake of the Pulwama terror attack.

On December 23, 2015, he was suspended from BJP for openly targeting Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley over alleged irregularities and corruption in Delhi and District Cricket Association.

Azad is scheduled to hold a press conference at the AICC headquarters later today.

Earlier, Azad had refused to disclose the party on whose symbol he would the fight the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.

Azad was a part of the World Cup Winning Indian Team in 1983.

Shiv Sena targets PM Modi over Pulwama terror attack

shivsena modi pulwamaIn a veiled attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Shiv Sena on Monday said no political “wave” had ever solved the Kashmir issue or stopped the killing of soldiers.

The Sena, an ally of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at the Centre and in Maharashtra, said it was time to “attack” Pakistan to seek revenge for the killing of soldiers, adding that the prime minister’s assurance of taking the perpetrators of the Pulwama terror strike to task should reflect in his actions.

It was not the time to launch a “surgical strike” against political opponents, the Uddhav Thackeray-led party remarked in an editorial in its mouthpiece, “Saamana”.

At least 40 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were killed and five injured in one of the deadliest terror attacks in Jammu and Kashmir on February 14 when a Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) suicide bomber rammed a vehicle carrying over 100 kg of explosives into their bus in Pulwama district.

Modi had on Friday warned Pakistan that attacks such as the one on CRPF soldiers in Pulwama will not weaken India and those responsible for such strikes will have to pay a “very heavy price”.

He had also said the security forces will be given complete freedom to crack down on terrorism.

The Sena said that while the government patted itself for “isolating” Pakistan at the international level, the neighbouring country was still carrying out terror attacks on Indian soil.

“The country has seen waves of anger and political triumphs, but it neither solved the Kashmir issue nor stopped the killing of soldiers,” it noted.

Referring to the Indian Army’s surgical strikes in 2016 on seven terror launch pads across the Line of Control (LoC) as a response to an attack on its base in Uri, it said the action was followed by “chest thumping” on how a lesson was taught to Pakistan.

“But we must understand what exactly a real surgical strike is. The way the US entered Pakistan and killed (al-Qaeda chief) Osama bin Laden (for the deadly 9/11 terror attacks in America), that is called a surgical strike,” it opined.

“This is not the time for carrying out surgical strikes on political opponents, but it is the time to attack Pakistan and seek revenge for the killing of our jawans…. The prime minister has talked about seeking revenge, now it should reflect in actions,” the Marathi publication said.

If the government showed the kind of courage that Sri Lanka had displayed in eliminating the LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) and making the island nation terror-free, India would get rid of 100 such Pakistan-like countries, the Sena said.

“This is not the time to indulge in politics but to stand firmly behind our jawans,” it added.

Army Major, 2 JeM militants among 7 killed in Pulwama encounter

Four Army personnel, including a major, and two Jaish terrorists were killed in an encounter in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama district on Monday, three days after a suicide bomber from the group drove his explosives-laden vehicle into a CRPF bus in the area, defence officials said.

A civilian was also killed in the exchange of fire in Pinglan area of south Kashmir’s Pulwama district, they said.

“The terrorists are believed to be linked to the February 14 car bombing. The exact identities of the two terrorists killed are being ascertained,” a defence spokesperson said.

Security forces launched a cordon and search operation during the night after receiving inputs about the presence of militants in the area,a police official said.

Militants fired at forces as the searches got under way, triggering a gun battle, officials said.

The Jaish-e-Mohammed has claimed responsibility for the February 14 terror attack that left 40 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel dead and five critically wounded.

Saudi agrees to joint venture with French firm to boost navy

SaudiSaudi Arabia’s state arms producer and a French government-majority firm signed an agreement on Sunday on a joint venture to boost the kingdom’s navy, amid calls to halt weapons sales to Riyadh over it role in Yemen. The memorandum of understanding between Saudi Arabian Military Industries (SAMI) and France’s Naval Group is aimed at providing the oil-rich Gulf state’s navy with state-of-the-art systems, a statement said.

“Through design, construction, and maintenance activities, the joint venture will contribute significantly to further enhancing the capabilities and readiness of our Royal Saudi Naval Forces,” SAMI boss Andreas Schwer said.

A spokeswoman for Naval Group which is owned by the French state and French multinational giant Thales refused to give any more details. French lawmakers and rights groups have repeatedly called on France’s government to suspend all arms deals to Riyadh because of the war in Yemen, where some 10,000 people have been killed since a Saudi-led coalition intervened in 2015.

Riyadh is battling on the side of the internationally recognised government against Iran-aligned Huthi rebels, in a conflict that has seen all sides accused of potential war crimes. The US House of Representatives this week voted overwhelmingly to end American involvement in Saudi Arabia’s war effort in neighbouring Yemen, dealing a rebuke to President Donald Trump and his alliance with the kingdom.

France, one of the world’s biggest arms exporters, has sold equipment to Riyadh and fellow coalition member the UAE notably Caesar artillery guns and ammunition, sniper rifles and armoured vehicles. OPEC kingpin Saudi Arabia has been one of the world’s top arms buyers for the past several years. But in 2017, the kingdom’s Public Investment Fund set up SAMI to manufacture arms locally with the fund expecting it to become one of the world’s top 25 defence companies by 2030.

Naval Group which was previously called DCNS has been embroiled in a long-running graft scandal over the 2002 sale of two Scorpene submarines to Malaysia for $ 1.2 billion. The submarine maker is alleged to have paid more than 114 million euros ($ 128 million) in kickbacks to a shell company linked to a close associate of ousted Malaysian leader Najib Razak.

A French investigation launched in 2010 has already led to four French executives involved in the deal being charged. They all deny wrongdoing.

Hospital Turns Dumpsite: PM Modi’s Swachh Bharat solely a Photo-Op?

lead 17 2 19Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, also known as the Clean India Mission or Clean India Drive, is a national level campaign run by the Indian Government. The aim of the mission is to cover all urban and rural areas in order to present the country as an ideal, clean, green, and healthy country before the world. The mission has targeted objectives like the construction of latrines, promoting sanitation programmes, cleaning streets and roads, eliminating the open defecation, converting insanitary toilets into pour flush toilets, eradicating manual scavenging, and complete disposal and reuse of solid and liquid wastes. However, in a disgraceful incident, the Thane Civil Hospital flouts all rules and regulations dumping medical waste in open. The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, which is supposed to be adhered by all government offices and Civic establishments, has been neglected at this hospital. The photo clearly shows that the medical waste like used syringes, Bloodstained clothes, used sanitary napkins, etc. lying around the hospital premises causing inconvenience to the citizens and patients visiting the hospital. However, the complete negligence of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan by a government hospital itself raises the question as if the ‘campaign’ was just for the Photo-Op?

While talking to Afternoon Voice, Dr. Shilpa Ambekar asserted, “The medical wastes not only pollute the premises of the hospitals but also toxic for the patients as well as their relatives. It can spread dangerous diseases like Dengue, Malaria, and Leptospirosis. The crowd at the government hospitals are high as the treatment are given free of cost, so the chances of spreading fatal diseases are high; hence, the officials must make sure that the areas around the hospital are clean and waste-free.”

She added, “Crores of rupees have been allocated for the Swachh Bharat Mission but the result seems to be zero. Apart from clicking photos, PM Modi, as well as celebrities, have done nothing in an actual sense.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially launched this campaign on October 2 (the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi) in 2014 at the Rajghat (cremation ground of Gandhi), New Delhi. While launching the campaign, the Prime Minister even had cleaned the road. However, it was reported as the biggest cleanliness drive ever in the history of India where almost three million government employees including students from schools, colleges, and universities became part of the cleanliness activities.

The WHO global air pollution database released in May 2018 confirmed in its report that several Indian cities have become the death traps because of the very high level of PM2.5 (particulate matter less than 2.5-micron size). However, of the 20 most populated cities in the world, the top 14 are in India alone which include Kanpur, Faridabad, Varanasi, Gaya, Patna, Delhi, Lucknow, Gurgaon, Jaipur, Patiala, and Jodhpur. According to the report, toxic levels of pollution led to the estimated death of nearly seven million people every year.

As reported by the national media, the aim of the mission is to connect each and every individual from all walks of life by making the structure of planting a tree. Swachh Bharat Abhiyan constructs individual sanitary latrines for household purposes especially for the people living below the poverty line, converting dry latrines into low cost sanitary one, providing facility of hand pumps, secure bathing facility, setting up sanitary marts, constructing drains, proper disposal of solid and liquid wastes, enhancing health and education awareness, and providing household and environmental sanitation facilities. However, it was also reported that, earlier, many awareness programmes such as Total Sanitation Campaign and Nirmal Bharat about the environmental sanitation and personal cleanliness were launched by the Indian government but they all proved to be ineffective to make India ‘clean’.

Looking at the poor management in the Indian government hospitals, Social Activist Sanjiv Sane said, “All the hospitals in the Thane district are good in appearance, but the very fact is that there is neither proper system nor cleanliness. There is corruption in almost every government hospital. After consulting with the doctors, the patients have to take medicines from the shops outside the hospital as all the hospital chemist shops are always out of medicines.”

“Modi has done biggest corruption on the name of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan; it was completely a political stunt to grab the votes,” he added.

The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is promoted throughout the country by many Indian celebrities to spread the mission as an awareness programme. The first nine people nominated by the Prime Minister for the campaign were Salman Khan, Kamal Haasan, Priyanka Chopra, Sachin Tendulkar, Anil Amban, Baba Ramdev, Shashi Tharoor, Kapil Sharma, and the team of ‘Tarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashma’. However, reports mentioned that Aamir Khan was also invited on the launch of the campaign. Later on, many brand ambassadors were chosen like Akhilesh Yadav, Mohammad Kaif, Manoj Tiwari, Kailash Kher, Sourav Ganguly, Kiran Bedi, and others by the Prime Minister to initiate and promote the mission in various fields. The PM also requested all the nine nominees to nominate another nine people separately to participate in the cleanliness drive as the aim was to continue the chain of the nominating nine people by each and every participated candidate of the mission until the message reaches to every Indian and make it a national mission.

There were many positive results of the campaign as many programmes like Swachh Bharat Run, Swachh Bharat Apps, Real-time Ministering System, and Swachh Bharat short film. However, to ensure the cleanliness in the official building of UP, chewing of paan, gutkha, and other tobacco products were banned by the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. In order to continue and make the campaign successful, the Finance Ministry of India also had imposed Swachh Bharat Cess in which everyone has to pay 0.5 per cent tax on all services in India which will be invested in the cleanliness campaign.

According to the Swachh Bharat Mission Gramin’s (SBM-G) website, 473,331 villages, 472 districts and 22 states have achieved the ODF (open defecation free) status (as of September 26, 2018). However, there have been multiple instances where the ODF status has been questioned and the most significant of these came from the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India on September 19, 2018, when a report was tabled in Gujarat Assembly. The report debunks the state government’s claim of its ODF status. However, the reality can be observed all across the nation, from the Mumbai local trains, during a drive through the coastal villages of Gujarat, and hinterland of Maharashtra and many more such places. However, Thane resident Sukhda Kelkar expressed, “At first, the action should be taken against the contractors of the hospitals. The workers do their job honestly but the problem is that the workers are not paid on time. The government hospitals are so dirty and full of different kinds of wastes and garbage that if a family goes there for treatment, they return with another disease.”

She went on saying, “As far as the Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan is concerned, it has failed completely. If it was effective then the hospitals must look garbage-free and clean at least.”

Unfortunately, the government’s lofty claim through the fancy advertisements, boastful political speeches, social media, and official websites seem to be just a photo-op and the dream to get a Clean India is far from being a reality!

Murders, kidnapping of children, chain-snatching are taking place in Madhya Pradesh: BJP

murder

The BJP on Sunday accused the Congress-led government in Madhya Pradesh of making the state an “asylum of criminals” and said that the banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) was getting active again. BJP national spokesperson GVL Narasimha Rao also alleged that the Congress was providing “tacit support” to proscribed outfits like SIMI and the Popular Front of India.

“Within two months of Congress rule, Madhya Pradesh has become an asylum of criminals. Murders, kidnapping of children, chain-snatching are taking place and no action is being taken. SIMI has again entered the state. Naxal activities have started,” he claimed. However, in an apparent reference to the Congress’ election symbol, he told reporters that the party’s hand was with criminals.

When asked that whether he had any specific information on the revival of SIMI activities in the state, Rao said that this was being seen in other states like Karnataka and Kerala where the Congress was sympathising with organisations like the PFI and SIMI. He later said that he was speaking on SIMI activities in Madhya Pradesh on the basis of information.

Hitting out at the Kamal Nath government, Rao said that the state government was thwarting development works and cited the implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana. The state government has been hampering the implementation of the Prime Minister Awas Yojana. It has not been giving its share for the continuation of this scheme. The Congress government is also conspiring to weaken the Centre’s Ayushman Bharat (Pradhan Mantri Jan Aarogya) Yojana.

Speaking on the Pulwama attack in which 40 CRPF jawans were killed, Rao claimed that the terrorism had been effectively controlled in the country since 2014. However, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has already made it clear that those who targeted our soldiers will not be spared.

Life sentence to man for killing accomplice during robbery bid

jail
A local court in Maharashtra has awarded life imprisonment to a 36-year-old man for killing his accomplice during a robbery bid in the year 2013.

District Judge P P Jadhav, in his order issued earlier this month, also imposed a fine of Rs 30,000 on the accused, Sanjay Patil, a resident of Borivali in neighbouring Mumbai.

The accused was convicted under the Indian Penal Code Section 302 (murder) and relevant sections of the Arms Act.

According to the prosecution, Patil and his accomplice Pradeep Bhartiya were on a car while planning to rob bank cash being carried in a vehicle moving ahead of them on September 26, 2013.

Patil asked Bhartiya, who was driving the car, to speed up the vehicle.

As their car reached near Waraladevi Talao in Bhiwandi town of Thane, Bhartiya slowed down the vehicle due to traffic in the area following which Patil fired at him, injuring him seriously.

The accused later rushed Bhartiya to a hospital where the latter died on October 13, 2013, during treatment.

The medical officer who conducted the post-mortem said the death was due to firearm-related complications (septicaemia shock).

The prosecution also submitted that the accused and his companions were travelling in the car for a criminal purpose. Since the offence committed by the accused, who had criminal antecedents, was serious, he should be given maximum punishment.

The judge, while pronouncing the sentence, said the prosecution proved beyond reasonable doubt that Patil had fired at Bhartiya, resulting in his death.
