East Indian cuisine owes its essence to the bottle masala, which is a blend of over 30 spices. The East Indians — mistaken for people living in Eastern India — were the first inhabitants of Mumbai. Named after the British East India Company, the community went up against the name ‘East India’ soon after the British ended their colonial rule in India. They however, thrived under the British rule. The influence is there for everyone to see, as they blended British cooking styles with their cuisine, which was predominantly Maharashtrian.
Maharashtra has vigorously impacted the community’s culinary scene, which also draws substantial parallels with Goa. The cooking methods employed pottery and clay vessels, and were cooked over wood or coal fires. Although the community has preserved their pre-Christian Marathi culture and traditions, Portuguese influences, too, have been absorbed.
If there is one thing that has become synonymous with East Indian cooking, it is the bottle masala which is a kitchen staple in East Indian Catholic homes. Since the masala is traditionally stored in beer bottles, it derived its moniker, bottle masala. A blend of about 30 spices — including Kashmiri red chillies, wheat, nutmeg, asafoetida, channa dal, cumin seeds, coriander seeds, turmeric, pepper, sesame seeds, shahi jeera, poppy seeds, mustard seeds, saffron, star anise, cloves, cinnamon, cardamom and bay leaves — this recipe is a heavily guarded secret. Each family has its own take on it. The bottle masala, however, doesn’t overpower a dish in the way most different masalas do. One can utilise it with chicken curry, mutton curry, fish curry, shellfish, beans or different types of vegetables, and it doesn’t leave your palate burning.
The East Indian Catholic community is known for its foogaths, a side dish where vegetables are fried into batters made with flour, yeast and fermented coconut toddy. Owing to the numerous post-Christmas weddings, their pulao mixed with dried fruits — aptly called wedding rice — is the ideal foil to the spicy Mutton Khudi Curry and the Duck Moile, which is traditionally eaten after Christmas Day.
The East Indians even have their own version of the sorpotel (a pork dish), where they use the bottle masala in the recipe. As a community, they prefer eating non-vegetarian food and have contributed to the culinary world with dishes such as vindaloo, sorpotel, boiled tongue, mutton chops, meat ball curry, kanji curry and beef croquettes while retaining Maharashtrian flavours in the cuisine through an abundant use of coconut, and of course, the bottle masala.
The East Indians speak Marathi is a blend of pure Marathi and Portuguese. But the working-class in Mumbai today prefer to speak in English since they are educated and hold good jobs.

It is good to hear from Delhi government that it is going to install 11,000 hotspots across Delhi to provide free Wi-Fi Internet. Government announced that the people of Delhi will be able to locate a WiFi connection after every 500 metres, with the hotspot connections supporting a radius of 100 metres. Human development index
That India ranks 129th among 189 countries in the human development index compiled by the United Nations Development Programme is not a major surprise, nor that it is still ahead of other South Asian countries. Yet, there are some positive facets that deserve to be noted. One, the difference between India’s rank on per capita income and that on human development is negative. It means that India ranks, admittedly among several nations, higher on human development than on income. The 2019 Human Development Report is a fairly political document. It is urgent to tackle inequality, even as poverty comes down and the gap between basic development indicators such as life expectancy at birth narrows across the world. The data show that with one-third the expenditure India makes, as a proportion of GDP, on education, Bangladesh makes comparable achievements on several fronts.

Parking fine is looting innocent citizens in broad daylight
Last week, I received two parking fine challans in a matter of 17 minutes for a parking infringement when the car was stationed at the same place. Rules specify that a parking infringement fine is valid for 60 minutes and that is what I was told by the traffic police official who told me to contact the RTO office. The incident occurred at Lokhandwala but contacting the RTO helpline number is a problem and one has to run from pillar to post at RTO office to get problems solved.
RTO rules need to be followed but that doesn’t mean motorists should be targeted for revenue generation to meet targets. RTO officials should educate citizens to follow rules but they themselves don’t follow them and infact hide at strategic locations to penalise motorists even when the signal has just turned Orange

Pakistan opposes Citizenship Amendment Bill
Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has once again exhibited his immaturity when he unnecessarily interfered in internal matters of India by opposing Citizenship Amendment Bill passed by Lok Sabha in India. If he thinks that Muslims in India are facing problems, then he can legislate some similar Bill in Pakistan Parliament to open doors of his country for desiring Indian Muslims.
Fact is that Pakistan Prime Minister is very well aware that in case the Citizenship Amendment Bill passed by Lok Sabha includes Muslims from other nations, then perhaps there will be a flood of Pakistani Muslims rushing to India because Muslims in India are enjoying much-much better life than their counterparts in Pakistan.

A-40-year-old resident of Malad was sold for Rs 1.60 lakh in Rajasthan on the pretext of a job. While she was rescued by the Kurar police recently, six people were arrested in this crime. According to police, the woman who lives with her husband and four children in Kurar, Malad East, had last month approached a woman for a job and asked her if she could get her a better paying job. The woman used to work as a housemaid in Mumbai. The victim was forcibly married to another man (one of the accused) in a temple.
The arrested accused were identified as Vivek Jagind (22), Mukesh Jagind (37), Krishna Kumar (33), Pravinkumar Jagind (33), Kavita Jadhav (35) and Kusum alias Rekha Nikam (45).
As per police report, Rekha took the woman to Jhunjhunu district in Rajasthan. Earlier, she was kept in Gujarat for four days. Later, she was introduced to three other men and was threatened that she will be murdered unless she agreed to marry one of them. As per the woman, she asked them to let her go.However; she came to know that Rekha had sold her to them.
When the accused refused to let her go on December 1, she allegedly attempted to escape. However, the people brought her back to where they were staying and assaulted her and one of them raped her.
Police said, on December 2, Vivek Jagind contacted the victim’s family and demanded a ransom of Rs 2 lakh for her release. He also threatened to kill her if they did not fulfill the demand. After that, on the same day, the victim’s family filed a complaint with the police. Later with the help of the call data, the police traced the accused people’s location and a week later on December 7, police rescued the woman and brought her back home. According to the police the accused have been remanded to police custody till December 16.
Rural women rushing towards Mumbai for housemaid jobs, a full-time live-in domestic help earns an average Rs 15,000 a month. Many faceless full-time maids in Mumbai who arrive from the tribal belt of Jharkhand, Orissa and even Chhattisgarh as herds of strangers ousted by poverty, joblessness, crop failure and Naxal threat, they alight from trains such as Gitanjali Express and the Howrah Express almost daily in search of jobs in the domestic work sector. Then, armed with Aadhaar cards, pan cards and gram panchayat cards, they appear for interviews at the offices of various maid agencies and, soon, may or may not depart after tasting financial freedom.
In the last six years, the number of such women migrants has almost doubled, according to the National Domestic Workers Federation (NDWF) which pegs the current population of migrants working as full-time maids in Mumbai at 1 lakh. This jump not only reflects the national 51 per cent leap in the number of rural-to-urban migrants between 2001 and 2011 but also lays bare the tendency of women migrants to outnumber men in this shift across India. While aspiration is the chief emotion that pulls women from rural Maharashtra to work as full-time maids in Mumbai.
Anupam Sinhal of Bookmybai.com told Afternoon Voice “It’s desperation that largely defines migrants from the North. Those from Maharashtra want to come to Mumbai and those from the North have to come,” which recently sent out a promotional message that read: “Two fresher female housemaids from Chhattisgarh available in Mumbai. No experience. They can do cleaning work. They cannot do cooking. Salary Rs 10000″. Employers prefer maids from these areas as they typically take leave once a year as opposed to maids from Maharashtra who go on leave every month.
Database of 50,000-odd maids in Mumbai is now made up of migrants from Chattisgarh and Jharkhand. The influx is mostly driven by word-of mouth, friends and fellow villagers. However, the more recent surge in number may also have to do with the fact that Delhi is losing favour among female domestic workers as the preferred workplace owing to lower salaries, exploitative agencies and the dearth of a sense of safety. Mumbai offers a fulltime maid Rs 15,000 too Rs 16000 a month. Delhi gives between Rs 8,000 and Rs 15,000. Moreover, the crime rate in Delhi is high.
These days its death of Talent in Bollywood in the name of Item Numbers, the Indian film industry has stooped so low, to sell their product they are coming down to any level. Enough with Item Numbers like retards these lyricists pick up a name and start writing crass words around them. Let it be Fevicol, Kundi Mat Khadkao Raja, Sheila, Munni, Pinky or Babli. Shame on all the so called A grade actresses to agree to such objectifying of women. Idiotic dances, beyond mediocre lyrics, and formula marketing gimmicks are all that film can offer modern audiences. An item number or an item song, in Indian cinema, is a musical performance that has little to do with the film in which it appears, but is offered to showcase vulgar dancing women in revealing clothes, to lend support to the commercial aspect of the film and also the so called top actresses.
Nowadays all these Item Numbers are performed by so called “A” grade heroines. These hit Item Numbers are, key to their business offers as a performer in different events. The same dance numbers are performed at New Year event, award shows and many such gatherings and events. The more the hit Item Numbers the demand too rises. In the race of earning money and remaining wanted in the glam world, these so called actresses have shed all sorts of inhibitions. These dance numbers are generally memorable, buoyant, and often sexually provocative for a song in a movie. However, the term as understood in Bollywood phraseology has entered the entertainment industry scenario as well. Item Numbers are usually added to Indian movies in order to generate publicity.
Item Numbers are flavoured by filmmakers for the reason that since they do not add to the plot, they afford the filmmakers with the opportunity to pick potential hit songs from the stocks. It is thus a vehicle for commercial success which ensures repeat viewing. The first song, “Jumma Chumma De De” (Hum, 1991), which means “Give us a kiss” is sung by a group of men, including the hero of the movie, to an ‘item girl’, who is just dancing in this song, situated in a bar. Many of the songs used in this ad take place in clubs or bars, where the hero is intoxicated. Two other phrases used, “Chammak Challo” (Ra.One, 2011) and “Chikni Chameli” (Agneepath, 2012) is euphemistic slang for prostitutes, especially ones who dance, and from the countryside.
The words refer to the colour of their skin as well as their jewellery and ornaments, not to the woman herself. I remember this trend aggressively started with the dancers like Helen, but lyrics used to be very sensible at that time. There were a particular set of dancers who used to do these numbers and the heroine of the movie has some reputed class. Now the trend has changed, Madhuri Dixit’s, Ek Do Teen and Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai were the biggest hits of modern days. Then double meaning songs and now the entire song revolves around one name and cheap lyrics. Like Munni Badnaam Huyi, or Sheila Ki Jawani.. now the new series, Kundi Mat Khadkao Raja and Halkat Jawani. Although, the derivation of the term “item number” is unclear, it is likely that it originates its meaning from the objectification of sexually attractive women. This is because an item in filmy Mumbai slang is a sexy woman. Moreover, Mumbai is famous for Dance bars, and all these characters, Munni, Sheila, Babli, Pinky are commonly known names of Dance bar and red light areas. These names relate to that kind of viewers.
Most of these lyricists are frequent visitors to such places. A female actor, singer or dancer, especially someone who is poised to become a star, who appears in an item number, is known as an item girl. The “item number” would feature an “item girl” who appeared in the film as a dancer, usually in a bar or nightclub, and was only in the film for the length of that song. It was often frowned upon at that point in time. There are item boys as well; however, females are more commonly featured in Item Numbers than males. Item Numbers typically feature one or more persons other than the lead actors sometimes even the lead actress doing these numbers. Most of the time established female and male actors would lend a “special appearance” to an item number. Is it fair to blame Bollywood, or even expect it to produce movies that adhere to a higher standard? The general sentiment that Bollywood, being such a huge influence for Indian society, has a responsibility to produce movies that show women in a progressive light, but hold that censorship is not a viable way to achieve this goal. We are living in a hypocritical time, where we are aggressive over protesting against abuse to the woman.
We are seeking respect for her; there are thousands of campaigns for woman and girl child’s rights and dignity. The same item number actress are been endorsed for the cause. The other side most reputed newspapers, are promoting sex by all means. Woman has not been put on this planet for your supreme entertainment or pleasure. A woman is not an adjective. If you cannot respect a woman, you are nothing.
Provocative material in films is nothing but a fantasy for million cinemagoers per day. Almost every movie has songs interspersed throughout the entire plot. Every song is not created the same, however a special genre of songs, called ‘item songs’, is often included in huge blockbusters. Item songs of late have contained actresses wearing skimpy outfits and are characterised by skimpy clothing and suggestive choreography and lyrics. These songs are often played constantly on television and the radio and become nationwide sensations. These songs often boost the careers of the actresses who continue to star in these numbers, earning them the title of ‘item girls’. The terminology itself degrades these women below human beings to inanimate objects who are simply there for the pleasure of the viewer, presumably male. This deconstruction of women plays along with the male gaze, viewing the female in parts rather than a whole. This plays on the notion of taking advantage of uneducated women for the use of pleasure. In the end, the question remains……………what are we trying to project or get out of such things? Are they needed of hour to promote any movie or just intellectual bankruptcy of filmmakers and viewers?
