The Curious Case of Summon Season: BJP, Robert Vadra, and the Never-Ending Blockbuster 2

In the great theatre of Indian politics, some plotlines never get old. One such time-tested classic is the ruling BJP’s all-consuming obsession with the Gandhi family — and Robert Vadra, their “extended liability” by matrimonial accident. Ever since the saffron regime ascended the throne in 2014, it’s as if a full-time department was created solely to find new ways to summon, grill, and headline-hunt this political dynasty. If governance had a sibling, it would be vendetta.

Let’s begin with the royal target — Sonia Gandhi. The “Queen Mother” of Congress was summoned, interrogated, and made the centerpiece of breaking news so many times that even news anchors must’ve started copy-pasting the script. Her only crime? Possibly being the matriarch of a party that once ruled with unmatched dominance. Since then, it has become an unspoken national ritual: summon a Gandhi, trend it on social media, generate noise, and then quietly move on… until the next headline cycle.

And then, there’s Robert Vadra — the man who didn’t know that marrying into the Gandhi family would come with a permanent ED subscription. Summons for breakfast, FIRs for lunch, and interrogations for dinner — the poor man must wonder if wedding vows also included a clause on ‘unlimited legal adventure’.

Most recently, Vadra has once again been summoned by the Enforcement Directorate in a money laundering case linked to UK-based arms consultant Sanjay Bhandari. While Bhandari continues to sip tea safely in London, refusing extradition like a stubborn guest, Vadra is the one dancing to the ED’s tune. On June 10, he skipped an appearance due to flu-like symptoms (how dare he have the audacity to get sick!), but his lawyer assured full cooperation — as always.

What follows is a well-rehearsed routine: the ED tries to record Vadra’s statement under the PMLA, talks of a possible chargesheet, and — voilà! — another prime-time spectacle is born. Rinse, repeat.

Vadra has already been interrogated multiple times in three separate cases: the infamous 2008 Haryana land deal, the alleged Bikaner land scam, and now the London flat allegedly purchased with kickbacks. In each case, there’s been more smoke than fire. But who needs convictions when you have controversy?

Let’s not forget the Bikaner chapter — where land meant for displaced villagers magically ended up in Vadra’s portfolio, only to be sold for a profit. Sounds juicy, until you realise that after years of legal huffing and puffing, there’s still no conclusive end. Similarly, the petroleum deal and the London flat — allegations flying, investigations dragging, headlines flashing, and truth… well, conveniently pending.

Of course, the opposition has raised valid concerns: is this legal scrutiny or political strategy in disguise? Vadra himself has claimed this is nothing but “political witch-hunt,” and many would agree. Because, honestly, what better way to distract from economic woes, social unrest, or electoral disasters than to summon Robert Vadra and let Twitter do the rest?

And the media? Oh, they gleefully play along. The second a Gandhi or Vadra steps into any agency’s office, news channels go into patriotic overdrive. “Big Breaking: Vadra grilled again!” they scream, conveniently ignoring the part where no court has convicted him, and no trial has reached conclusion.

But Vadra is no saint either. His real estate empire mushroomed mysteriously around 2007, coinciding with the Congress’s golden years. Dozens of firms were born overnight, land and hotels were snapped up like candy, and his empire grew faster than India’s GDP ever could. Did he benefit from proximity to power? Most likely. Was it illegal? That’s for the courts — not the court of public opinion — to decide.

Meanwhile, his wife, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, walks beside him to every hearing like a modern-day Draupadi, undeterred, elegant, and — in the BJP’s eyes — unforgivably defiant. Her support only adds fuel to the BJP’s burning need to drag this narrative further, possibly in the hope that public perception will do what evidence cannot.

So the question remains — is Robert Vadra guilty of being a corrupt businessman, or just guilty of marrying into political royalty?

The truth, if we ever get there, will have to emerge from beneath layers of selective outrage, investigative theatrics, and electoral timing. Until then, summon season continues. Stay tuned — the next episode airs soon.
