Dipa has made India proud

Dipa Karmakar may not win a medal at the coming Rio De Janeiro Olympics but she has done our country proud by becoming the first gymnast ever to qualify for the Games. It was history in the making and truly an incredible achievement as Dipa clinched the Gold in vaults final at the test event of the Rio Games which is a rare such feat by an Indian gymnast in a global event. Dipa reminds one of the Russian talent Nadia Comaneci who scored the first ever perfect Ten in the Montreal summer Olympics in 1976 and she had won 3 gold at the games. Dipa’s qualification at the games itself is a big morale booster for gymnasts in India as she has broken the qualification barrier which is no small deal in a sport that has been dominated by the Europeans and Americans. We in India possess the acrobatic talent but the encouragement is missing. It is never too late in making a beginning and Dipa’s achievement and government’s encouragement could give a fillip and boost to gymnastics as a sport in India. People should not expect a medal from Dipa Karmakar in the coming Olympics but this ‘poor man’s Nadia Comaneci has the makings to make gymnastics very popular in our country and one can expect a medal winning performance from Indian gymnast in the next decade at the Olympics!
