“We must create more skill based courses in our educational system like the way we have in our vocational training centers to mould and direct our students for a better tomorrow,” said Dr. Ajeenkya Patil, Chairman, D.Y. Patil Group. Dr. Patil was speaking at the concluding ceremony of a 3-day educational fair at Ganesh Kala Kreeda Kendra, in Swargate, Pune.

“What is more important is the quality and ability of a person to implement things, not the qualifications,” Ajeenkya Patil was referring to the recent controversy regarding Mrs. Smriti Irani’s qualification to become the Union HRD minister. Mr. Bharat Agarwal, Chairman, VIT, Mr. Karuna Gera, President Lokmat were the speakers amongst others.

“In India we have a dearth of University-led research. Wherever there is research happening at the university, it is mostly esoteric. I also see a fundamental flaw in the system. After independence in order to give impetus to scientific development we created national research laboratories. While these research labs served a purpose, it took away research from University campuses. Most of the research and related funding was prioritized towards these labs which should have come to Universities” says Dr. Patil.
