A Catholic cross located at SV Road, Vile Parle was vandalized in the wee hours of Monday. Police have arrested the miscreant and taken into custody in connection with this case.
After the incident, a police van was deployed near the spot in order to avert any communal tension in the vicinity.
Sources from Santa Cruz Police Station, said, “The eye witness identified the accused and he admitted to committing the crime.”
A FIR has been filed against the accused. In December last year too, the cross was vandalized. The Santa Cruz police at that time had called in finger print experts and sent the statue to the Forensic Science Laboratory at Kalina for testing. A new statue was installed in its place and it has been vandalized this time too.
Local Congress MLA Krishna Hegde from Vile Parle said, “It’s not the first instance when this incident had occurred. It is possible that some people may be trying to incite communal disturbance.”
A resident of the locality spoke on the condition of anonymity and said, “The cross is not only a centre of faith, it is over 100 years old and is a heritage structure. We are very peace loving community. Strict action must be taken against the accused responsible for disturbing the communal harmony.”
