The ashes of BJP leader and former union minister Gopinath Munde was on Sunday immersed here in the Godavari river.
Local BJP MLA Girish Mahajan immersed the ashes of Munde, who died in a road accident on June 3 in New Delhi.
Mahajan, along with other leaders of BJP, Shiv Sena and MNS immersed the ashes at the ‘ramkund’, located on the banks of river Godavari, after performing rituals this morning, city BJP chief Laxman Savaji said here.
The ashes were brought from Beed yesterday late evening and were kept at the BJP office, where large number of people gathered to pay tribute to the veteran leader, he said.
Today, ashes were kept at city’s V N Naik education society’s premises in morning for ‘darshan’, later it was taken in a procession for immersion, Savaji added.
Earlier, state BJP president Devendra Fadnavis yesterday handed over the urns containing ashes to district BJP presidents at a solemn function at the party office in south Mumbai.
The ashes would also be immersed in various rivers and holy places, including Harihareshwar, Narsobachi Wadi, at the confluence between Krishna and Koyna rivers, Pandharpur, Manjara river near Latur and at Godavari sangam at Nanded.
In Thane district, Munde’s ashes were immersed in Viatarna river at Tilse in Wada taluka in the presence of hundreds of people and politicians cutting across party lines.
The urn containing the ashes was immersed in the river at the hands of Palghar MP Chintaman wanga and National Council Member of BJP, Om Prakash Sharma. Vikramangadh MLA and BJP’s Thane district unit president Vishnu Sawra and other leaders of the party were also present.
In Thane city, the ashes were kept in the party office for darshan.
Prominent leaders, including MP Rajan vichare, Leader of BJP in Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) Sanjay Waghule, the Leader of House Naresh Mhaske and citizens paid their tribute to the leader.
