Maharashtra State Commission for Women (MSCW) will organise a state-level lawyers’ conference in Mumbai on July 26 to dwell on issues of dignity, safety, empowerment and freedom of women.
The day-long conference will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan and eminent legal luminaries will participate in it, MSCW chairperson Susieben Shah said.
It will take up the issues of difficulties and hurdles in effective implementation of the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act 2005, sexual violence against women and children, rights of women, formation of local complaints committee and internal complaints committee, property rights of women – both matrimonial and parental – and social and economic oppression of women, Shah said.
The Commission has so far received 1,500 complaints from across the state for which regional-level hearings are being held to deal with them, she said.
It has already held hearings in Pune, Nashik and Amravati and will hold a hearing in Nagpur.
MSCW has been writing letters to all political parties to include their commitment for women’s safety and dignity in their manifesto for the state Assembly elections to be held later this year, she said.
The Commission wants parties to set up regional and headquarter level committees to hear women’s plight, she said.
