In view of the persisting deadlock over government formation in Jammu and Kashmir following the demise of former chief minister Mufti Mohd Sayeed, the state’s Governor N N Vohra on Monday asked BJP and PDP – the alliance partners – to clarify their stand on the issue by Tuesday.

Mehbooba Mufti“Yes, Governor has called her (Mehbooba Mufti) for a meeting tomorrow(Tuesday),” PDP spokesman Naeem Akhter said.

According to sources, the Governor sent a fax communication to the PDP Chief last evening for holding consultations.

The BJP’s top leaders in the state met this morning and are headed to Delhi, where they will discuss with party chief Amit Shah, the PDP or People Democratic Party’s conditions for a renewal of their alliance.

Mehbooba Mufti wants a written assurance, sources said, on key demands of her regional party on contentious issues like Article 370, which grants special status to Jammu and Kashmir.

The BJP has maintained that the terms of engagements settled at the time of government formation in March 2016 should not be changed. Sources say that the BJP does not want to be seen as buckling to the strong-arm tactics of the PDP. BJP leaders are also likely to meet Mehbooba only after the deal has been sealed.

After a four-hour long meeting with party leaders on Sunday, Mehbooba had said PDP will take a call on government formation as and when it is confident that Mufti Mohammed Sayeed’s vision and mission will be carried forward and implemented in letter and spirit.

The PDP has indicated that it won`t go ahead with the alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party if the agenda of alliance stitched under the leadership of former chief minister Late Mufti Mohammad Sayeed was not implemented in letter and spirit.

Also on its list of demands is that three key power projects be handed over by the Centre to the state government. Ms Mufti wants the Centre to deliver on promises made in a common agenda of governance they had agreed upon.

The BJP, in a huddle today, does not want to seem like the party breaking an alliance or forcing fresh elections, sources said.
