Mandate-Sonia-GandhiAccepting that the Congress had been given a drubbing in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, party president Sonia Gandhi said on Friday that she accepted the verdict of the people with humility.

Addressing a short press conference in the national capital along with her son and Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi, Sonia said, “The mandate is clearly against us. We accept the verdict of the people with humility,” adding, “As party president I accept responsibility for our defeat.”

She congratulated the new government but at the same time said, “We hope that the new government which will come at Centre will not compromise with the interest of the nation.”

Sonia also told the press that the Congress would continue to fight for their ideologies.

Speaking before Sonia, Rahul too said that in his view the Congress had done badly. “There is lot for us to think about. I hold myself responsible for what has happened,” he said.

The Congress has been handed a drubbing by the people of India who voted overwhelmingly in favour of the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Whereas, the Congress ended up with its worst ever tally and went below 100 mark, the BJP got an absolute majority with NDA crossing the 300 figure mark.

This is the first time since 1984 that any party has got such a massive mandate.

BJP’s prime ministerial candidate and Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi led the party’s campaign from the front addressing rallies across India with BJP embarking on one its most humongous campaign.

Though Rahul was the face of the campaign of his party, the Congress had not named anyone as its PM candidate.
