A 12-year-old girl in Kolkata was kidnapped, gang-raped and murdered, allegedly by two cab drivers who have been arrested. The girl, who lived on the pavement with her family, was allegedly picked up from the streets in central Kolkata around 5 am on Wednesday. Her mother said she raised an alarm immediately.
Drivers Shankar Shaw and Guddu Singh allegedly took the victim to the Park Circus flyover and raped her in the vehicle and later, throttled the girl and tossed her body into a canal below the flyover. The body was found near a canal.
The gruesome incident is sure to trigger questions about effectiveness of police patrol in the city, and the safety of women in general.
The police also said Shaw and Singh confessed to the crime after they were arrested.
The incident taking place on a newly-inaugurated stretch of the Parama Island flyover — locally known as the Ma flyover — has raised many questions on the safety of women and the arrangements of police-patrolling in the area.
The girl was reportedly from a poor family and lived on a pavement in the city.
